State high points

Here is my current completion map as of this past weekend. It really doesn't look like much. I have plans to get IN and OH in December and then MS, AL, and FL in March of 2010. Also hoping to take a trip out west with Robert (he guides for a living) and Eric, and anyone else who is interested. We are planning on putting in for a lottery spot to hike Mt Whitney (CA) and also get NV and possibly AZ on the same trip. Nothing else in the planning phase yet, but a TX, NM OK trip might be in the near future.

State High Points

Just got my 21st state high point. Ran up/down Mt Marcy yesterday with Robert (Hungarian) and Eric (Morsian). Fun stuff! 2:10 up and 2:09:30 down with 16 min on the summit. 15.2 miles.

Added on some fun today with a couple of 4,000' peaks (Cascade & Porter) and a fire tower (Belfry mountain). About 7 miles total today.

Snowshoe predictions

Chris Dunn fired the first shot with the predictions of the top 10 for next season, double-j made his picks.....so here I go. Here are my predictions on the over 40 men.

Dave Dunham (CMS Polar bears)- age 45, 11 races in WMAC series in 2008/09. Won two races out-right (Catamount & Hawley). Top 40+ finisher at all races except Turner (2nd to TiVo). Sixth place overall at USSSA national championship and 3rd 40+ finisher. Plans to race a LOT this winter but has had injury troubles (two stress fractures in 11 months).

Tim Van Orden (CMS Polar bears) – age 41, 11 races in WMAC series in 2008/09. TiVo won the Camp Saratoga race outright and was top 40+ at Turner. He was 2nd 40+ in all of his other races. A healthy and non-sleep deprived Van Orden will beat everyone. He is a strong climber (stair climbs are his specialty) and a fearless descender. Should be a great battle for first with Dunham all year.

Steve Wolfe (GCS) - age 45, 3 races in WMAC series in 2008/09 and 5 New Hampshire races. Steve was top 40+ at Pooh Hill, Horse hill finishing both in second place overall. He was also tops at Kingman farm finishing 3rd overall. It will be interesting to see how many races he does with the bigger NH series and the full calendar of WMAC/Dion races.

Ken Clark (HTC) - age 47, 15 races in WMAC series in 2008/09. Clark races all the time and is very consistent. Ken was the top 40+ at Winterfest (3rd overall) and second 40+ at Hoot Toot, Mass State champs, Blizzard, and Hallockville. Ken was the overall WMAC series champion from 1999-2001

Paul Bazanchuk (WMM) - age 54, 7 races in WMAC series in 2008/09. Paul was the 50+ champion in all of the races. He was also typically the third 40+ runner to cross the line (usually behind Dunham and Van Orden). He had many top ten (overall) finishes with a best (I think) of 5th place at the Hoot Toot race.

Ahmed Elasser - age 47, 3 races in WMAC series in 2008/09. Only ran races in NY and was second 40+ in two of the three races (behind Van Orden).

Larry Dragon - age 49, 10 races in WMAC series in 2008/09. Dragon was a top five 40+ finisher in all of his WMAC races. His best finish (I think) was 9th place overall and 3rd in the 40+ at Hallockville.

Others who very well will be in the top ten:
Peter Keeney - age 44, 2 races in WMAC series in 2008/09.
Andrew Smith - age 45, 1 race in WMAC series in 2008/09.
Chris Dunn (Acidotic)- age 40, 1 race in WMAC series in 2008/09.
Edward Alibozek (WMAC/Dion) – age 47, 15 races in the WMAC series in 2008/09.

Who knows what guys will come out of the woodwork with the Nationals in our region?
Dan Verrington (CMS Polar bears) is likely, although he only raced once last year, he has run at numerous National championships.

Teams to watch for (strong 40+ teams):
Acidotic
CMS Polar bears
Dungeon rock
WMAC

New England championships

Lone Gull marked a milestone of sorts for me....it was the 100th New England championship I'd raced.
The 100 break down as follows:
Trail - 4
XC - 5
Road - 82

The road race break down:
5km - 11
6km - 1
5m - 7
10km - 12
12km - 5
8m - 3
15km - 5
10m - 10
20km - 4
13.1m - 11
25km - 1
30km - 7
26.2m - 4
50km - 1

Finish places:
1 = 14
2 = 14
3 = 12
4 = 6
5 = 11

Not in the top 5 = 43

Ollie versus Lone Gull

I love messing around with numbers and today I decided to work on the difference between the two New England championships. The races were only 8 days apart so no one really had time to get out of shape (or into shape) in that small window.

My goal for the 10k was to run a faster pace per mile than the 5m of a week ago. My logic was that I'd have an extra week of training and that first hard effort under my belt (after the 6 week lay-off). I exceeded my goal and it got me wondering how many people ran a faster pace per mile from the Ollie to the Lone Gull. I used the top 200 finishers (because I didn't feel like plowing through almost 800 finishers from each race). There were 95 runners who finished in the top 200 in both races. I then divided there time from Ollie by their time for Lone Gull and came up with a percentage. The difference between Ollie (4.91 miles) and Lone Gull (6.22 miles) yields 126.68%. So anyone under that actually ran a faster pace per mile at the 10km than at Ollie (despite running 1.32 miles more). I was surprised to find that of the 95 who finished in the top 200 in both races 48 (almost exactly half) ran faster! I find that very surprising. I'd expect some slow down for most. Some could have been affected by the weather at Ollie or perhaps "dogged it" at Ollie knowing they'd be doing a 10km a week later. Somehow I doubt that, we are talking about some of the top runners in NE and some of the top age group runners as well. Maybe the Lone Gull course is faster? The topo shows that Ollie had a total climb of 120' and Lone Gull had 231', so that doesn't seem right.

Anyway, I'm happy that I had a better run at LG than Ollie.

USATF NE 10km history

I meant to post this one prior to the 10km championships, but here it is.

The 10km distance has been contested in all of the Grand Prix series (1985-2009). This will be the first time Lone Gull has hosted the championship. Nashua (NH) and Winthrop have hosted the championship five times with no other site hosting more than three times. CMS has won the team championship fourteen times including an impressive 12 times in a row from 1989-2000 (the last time CMS won). The BAA, Whrilaway, and Reebok Boston each have two victories. Nike Boston holds the team record with an impressive 2:28:03 from 1988. CMS best team time was 2:29:04 in 1989 for an average of 29:49 per scoring team member. That year Scott Clark failed to score for the team despite running 30:28 (4:55 pace).

In 1990 CMS ran a split squad with half the members CMS-A and the other half CMS-B. Apparently this was allowed at that time (leave it to Drewniak to find a way). Amazingly CMS took the top two spots CMS-A winning in 2:33:34 and CMS-B running 2:37:33. The last time CMS took the team title was 2000 when CMS put five in the top nine. Larry Sayers was the final team member to score placing 9th in 32:01. The 40 year old Sayers was fourth in the masters field, trailing Mark Donahue, Craig Fram, and Paul Hammond.

CMS runners have been the individual winners eight times. The last time a CMS runner took the title was in 2000 when 40 year old Mark Donahue ran 30:24 at Market Square. Eric Morse won in 1999 at Market Square running 30:25 and Killian Lonergan also won in 1998 at Market Square in 30:44. Darrin Shearer placed 2nd overall but took the New England title in Salem running 31:25 in 1997. Dave Dunham also placed second in taking the NE title at Bridge of Flowers in 1996 running 31:42. Rod Ellsworth and Mike Platt both won in Winthrop (1994 & 1990) running 30:12 and 29:50 respectively. Rick Doiron won in 1989 in Nashua NH with a fine 29:11. Only the BAA (three) and GLRR (four) have more than one individual titlist.

A Nearly complete history of the 10 kilometer NE championships is listed below….

Verrington vs. Dunham - Streaks

Since someone asked....

Dan has the longest streak with 30 in a row from 2004-2006 (I broke that streak, beating him at Mt Wash) then he went on to beat me another 21 times in a row (which I again broke at Mt W).

From 1988-92 I beat Dan 19 times in a row (broken when we tied in 25:31 at Feaster five and he was given the nod), then I beat him 22 times in a row from 1992-95 (broken when neither of us wanted to win at Clarence Demar, both timed in 2:30:25).

The first time Dan "really" beat me was Rocket City 1995 (2:24:51 to 2:25:41).

Other streaks, 18 in 1996 and 20 in 1998-1999.

After 2000 we were pretty even beating each but never having a streak of more than four or five. Then Dan pretty much always beat me after 2004.

Verrington beats Dunham for the 100th time

I believe no one has raced me as many times as Dan Verrington. As of 09-20-09 we have raced 214 times. From 1985 to present. Three-quarters of the total are from the last 10 years. With his (head-to-head) victory at the Lone Gull race Dan now has beaten me 100 times. I still have the (slight) edge with 114 victories, but over the last five years I've only beaten Dan 7 times to his 74!

In the 214 races I won 33 times and finished second 33 times (I'm talking overall now, not just Dan versus Dave). Dan had 21 overall victories and 20 second place finishes. In a testament to the fact that many times we brought each other to the race where the other may have won had we not.....I won and Dan finished 2nd at 11 races and....Dan won and I finished second at 13 races.

Below I've shown the spreadsheet for the last 50 times we've raced each other....

Iron runners

I'm still hoping to bag my first ever "Iron runner" jacket. With 6 races down, only the marathon remains. There are about 90 people who have done all six. Here are the top twenty based on total time.
