Good luck to everyone running Newburyport tonight!
I’ve had decent luck at the 10 mile although I’ve never
won (got 2nd place twice). Hard to believe it has been 30 years
since the first time I raced at the Yankee Homecoming.
My final race of the month in July of 1985 was the Yankee
Homecoming 10 mile in Newburyport. This was my first attempt at 10 miles and I
went in with rookie optimism hoping to run around 49 flat (from the presumption
that a 24:30 wasn’t hard so two in a row should be manageable). I struggled
after four miles, hit 5 miles in 24:36 and ran the second 5 miles in 25:34 for a
50:10 fifth place finish and a lesson in long-distance running.
