USATF NE 10km champs (Lone Gull)

USATF NE 10km championships (Lone Gull) – It looked like Gloucester would be the coolest place in New England on a warm day.  It would get up into the low 90’s inland during the day.  It was already “warm” and very humid when Dan Verrington and I arrived 90 minutes before the 9am race start.  We got a group of CMS guys together and did a 2 mile warm-up checking out the extended road run to the start (you could walk across the beach and save a mile, but have to dump sand out of your shoes).  I was drenched after the start but feeling good about the race.  I hoped it wouldn’t feel like a sprint like the 5k did last weekend.  My plan was to go out a bit more conservatively and hopefully run a strong second 5k.
Nearly 1,000 lined up for the scenic race along the ocean.  There wasn’t any wind this year but there also isn’t any shade on the course.  I lined up just behind the USATF women about 6 or 7 rows back and got a clean start.  I could see many of the 50+ age group guys up ahead but focused on just relaxing.  My watched beeped at the half-mile (2:55) and that got me going a little quicker.  Right around that time Mark Reeder (GLRR) and Pete Bottomley (Dirigo) went by and I “sort of” went with them.  I didn’t quite latch on and they were a few seconds ahead at the mile (5:46).  I concentrated on running the tangents, which isn’t as easy back in 100th place.
The second mile has a couple of twists and a few minor bumps so I was happy to get a 2m split of 11:32 (5:46).  I was mostly just working to hold my place and keep Reeder and Bottomley from pulling too far ahead.  At 3 miles they were about 10 seconds ahead as I came through in 17:29 (5:57) and the 5km mark in 18:12.  Right after the 5k I started working on closing the gap and was really surprised to catch Mark as my watch beep for 3.5 miles.  Pete was still about 5 seconds ahead and had just caught Charlie Bemis (WRT). A sub-6 (5:59) for the fourth mile, which is probably the toughest mile of the race got me up to Charlie but still about 5 seconds behind Pete.  Not much changed in the 5th mile 5:56 which got me through in 29:24.  From 5 to the finish three people passed me (two of the top women and a guy from Somerville RR).  They were the only ones to go by in the 2nd half of the race.  I passed a few people as well so I didn’t lose any overall places.  I moved well in the last mile running a 5:47 but never closed on Pete.
I crossed the line in 36:28 (36:31 gun time) which was a bit of a disappointment but not my worst time at Lone Gull.  The competition was tough as it always is here so I can’t complain with an 8th place finish in the 50+ and 100th overall.  Only one more race left in the Grand Prix (Baystate Marathon – Oct 22)!
