I plotted out the trip back from Florida by trying to time it out so that I wasn't going near any big cities during rush hour. I also figured out some places to stop for runs that would each be about 4 hours apart. The nearly 1,400 mile drive would be broken up with some small breaks at what I hoped would be interesting locations.
I left Z-hills at 3:30am with a big coffee and the iPod cranking. First up was Harris Neck Wildlife area in Townsend Georgia. The former navy air base had an interesting network of trails and former runways to check out. On my way out, I stopped at the "smallest church in America".
Next up was a fail in trying to find the bike path in Florence SC. GPS just could not locate it, so onward to Richmond VA for the Capital Bike path. This was a beautiful rolling path from Richmond to the outlying areas. I got in a pleasant 6m run before fueling up and rolling onward.
I made it to NJ (nearly 1,000 miles into my drive) and called it a night. I got a very short 3 hours of tossing and turning before getting onward. I closed out the drive with short runs on the Blackstone River bike path, Bruce Freeman Rail trail (over the new bridge in Concord) and the Methuen Rail Trail. It was fitting that I ended the trip with a bike ride, since I'd been on all of these bike paths and hadn't ridden. I got in a pleasant ride in Concord before calling it a very long day!
