25 years ago (March 1997) – Only two races during this month. I was on my way to my first truly bad injury (I was running on a stress fracture for months) but the lack of racing had nothing to do with that. I was training hard and it paid off with two big wins and a course record. The first race was the hilly Stu’s 30k in Clinton, MA. I fell off the back of the lead pack with a couple of miles to go but found another gear on the last climb (out of Clinton center). I was able to pass Craig Fram at the top of the hill and then overtook the leader with 100 meters to go. I held on for a couple of seconds win in 1:39:14 (pictured right). Three weeks later I took to the trails along the shores of the Merrimack River and came away with a win and a new course record. I took the lead ¼ mile into the race and went on to win by over 4 minutes in 56:52.
