5 years ago (March 2017) – I raced four times this month while running 80 miles per week, getting out on snowshoes early in the month then hitting the road. I kicked off the month taking a bad spill while running at Weir Hill, the broken rib would bother me for weeks. The first weekend (03/05/17) had me headed to Waterville Valley for the Granite State snowshoe championships. I must have gotten out slowly as I was in 15th early and not into the top 10 until the mile. I got close to 4th & 5th but never quite got there taking 6th in 39:35 over the 5.2 mile course with 700’ of climb/descent. Teammate Tim Van Orden won in 36:06. The following weekend (03/12/17) I headed out to Woodford VT for the Northeast Snowshoe Federation championships. It was exactly zero degrees when I arrived at Prospect Mountain. Teammates Paul Bazanchuk and Ed Sheldon joined me for a warm-up over part of the course. Tim Van Orden was the race director, and he gave us a gem of a course with 6.3 miles and 400’ of climb and descent over mostly fast groomed trail. I got another slow start and eventually moved up to 10th place in 46:11. Next was the USATF NE ½ marathon championships at New Bedford (03/19/17). I had a decent enough run on a chilly (30s) and breezy (20-40 mph) day taking 9th in the 50+ om 1:20:48. The final race of the month was the kick-off to the Capital Area Race series (CARS) at the tough Gilmanton 5k. I had a pretty good run taking 8th overall in 18:22 which was tops in the 50+ but well behind the 50+ course record set by Ernie Brake (17:55). Eleven-year-old Aidan Cox ran an excellent 17:42 to take 4th place.
