Trip - Day 1

After the 1 mile race I did a short warm-down then a pleasant hour on the bike before heading south.  My plan was to drive until I got tired then sleep in the car.  After some rest I'd try to get to Harpers Ferry MD for a run on the Apalachin Trail and the C&O canal path.

I ended up driving straight through to Harpers Ferry and parked at a little after 2am after over 600 miles of driving.  I made nest in the back seat/trunk and slept fitfully until 6:30am.  I got out for my run as it slowly got brighter.  I made my way on the AT across the river and onto the C&O.  I had not been here since the JFK 50 mile race in 2001.  I was treated to a beautiful sunrise as I slowly shuffled (sore from the mile race) along.  Then it was a quick trip to the tri-state point (MD, WV, VA).  After that I was back in the car and on my way to Whitetop VA where I visited the tri-point for VA, NC, TN.  After that it was a short run on the Creeper Trail, a great rail trail from Whitetop to Damascus.  I closed out the day finishing the drive to NC and arriving in Morganton after another 426 miles of driving (for the entire day).
