Day three dawned COLD, well at least it seemed cold for NC. I was greeted by a howling wind and temps right at freezing when I arrived at Sterling Gap. I'd read that the 2.6 miles (climbing 1,919') was on a nice former jeep road and I was not disappointed. I got to the tower as some who were camping near the top were shaking off a cold night's sleep. I made a slow ascent of the tower which was coated in frost. Then headed down. The round trip 5.2 miles was done in 78 minutes.
Off to Joanna for a 1m jaunt up to the top under sunny skies and temps in the 40s.
My last tower of the day was Mt Albert. I parked what I guessed to be 1.5 to 2 miles from the top and ran on the access road. I took the AT for the final 1/4 mile that climbed over 400'! I bumped into a couple on the summit who had seen me parking on the road and they were shocked that I'd somehow passed them. When I mentioned I took the AT which was shorter but steeper they noted that the way they came up was pretty steep. I had to laugh on the run down as it descended those 400' but over 3/4 of a mile!
