Looking back - May 1992 & 1987

35 years ago – In stark contrast to my final high school season, my final month of racing in College (May 1987) included just two races. I ran a (then) school record of 14:11.6 to take fourth place at the BC invitational. Conditions were close to ideal as I hit splits of 4:28/4:37/4:36. Two weeks later I headed out to the NCAA championships at Cape Girardeau MO. The 10,000 meters was a tough run due to the high 80 degree temperatures.  I took 6th place in 29:54 running splits of: 4:43/4:44/4:48/4:51/4:54/4:47.

30 years ago – I raced quite a bit in 1992, it was my first year with CMS and I wanted to do the team races but I also wanted to do all of the races I enjoy. The CMHC 10 mile race in Worcester was my first “big” race coming off of the Olympic Trials marathon in April. I got buried by Antonio Witzak (50:37) who topped a field of 815 on a warm and windy day. I was happy enough with 2nd place in 51:26. The following week I hit the outdoor track for the BC all-comers meet. I ran my PR for 3,000 meters (8:16.9) taking 6th place. John Gregorick won in 7:54! A week later I continued with outdoor track, running the Twilight Invitational 10,000 meters in 29:26.7 for 7th place. I closed out the month with a long day in Wilton NH. I set a course record at Pack Monadnock, running 59:30. Art Demers and I then ran back to Wilton! That was not the easiest way to get a 20+ mile day!
