Longfellow Frostbite race

Next up was the Longfellow Frostbite 2.5km race in Portland Maine.  Longtime teammate Eric Morse was planning on running with his pup (Murdock) and his GF Chris was running with her dog as well (Gracie).  I got in a triple on Saturday running with the guys in Chelmsford then heading to Concord before closing out the day with a run on Mackworth Island (Falmouth ME).  The island had a 1.5 mile loop and featured a pet cemetery for Governor Baxter’s dogs.  The island was quite popular, even on a chilly and breezy winter day. I nabbed one of the few remaining parking spots.  The trail was nice with some pretty ocean views, but mostly I had to keep an eye on my footing as it was a bit icy and muddy.  I met up with Eric and Chris later in the day and then watched the USATF track championships while winding down.

Eric and I got in a 3.5 mile pre-warm-up-warm-up running a couple of loops around the Mall of Maine.  It was a good opportunity  to catch up with Eric and loosen up before heading to downtown Portland.  I was fairly early and grabbed my number at race headquarters before heading out for a proper 3 mile warm-up that included a preview of the course.  Although billed as a 2.5k (1.55 miles) it looked to be about .1 long (1.65 miles).  It would only have two turns, both 180 degrees as we headed uphill for .4 then proceeded downhill past the start and another .4 to the final turn then a slight uphill final .4 to the finish.  I was hoping to break 6’s which is about my current 5k pace.  If all went well I hoped to muster low 5:40 pace (based on running a 5:28 mile earlier this year).  I switched into race flats and did another mile with some strides.  Ugh, I felt tired and slow and just not “feeling it”.

The field was already lined up when I got to the start and the Race Director was going over some instructions.  He yelled at Eric to get to the back “the very back” of the field or he’d disqualify him.  I get it that it isn’t a dog race, but it does allow dogs.  Eric obviously  knows how to race with Murdock and he was well off to the side.  This would now mean that they’d have to pass through the 100 plus people.  Eric didn’t seem too concerned but I thought it unfair.  I’d looked around at the start and didn’t see anyone who looked like they’d be competitive.  Darren Winchenbach had introduced himself, we had raced at the indoor 5k last month, and noted the field looked “weak”.

A little 10-year-old kid shot out at the start and Darren went with him.  I slowly got up to speed and caught Darren about 200 meters in.  The kid was tough, I didn’t catch him until just before the turn at 4/10ths of a mile.  After the turn I knew it’d be a nice steady downhill and I worked it as hard as I could.  Eric gave me a nice cheer as he went by (already into the top 20).  I heard a lot of people cheering for “Kristin” so I knew someone was still pretty close as I went by the start/finish.  It seemed to take forever to get to the final turn.  I counted about 10 seconds before Kristin went by so I had a little less than 20 seconds lead with .4 to go.  I felt I pushed hard for the line and was happy to hold on for a win in 9:26.  Most got 1.65 for a distance (I got 1.63) so I can’t gripe too much about a 5:43 pace…and certainly no griping about a win!  Kristin Barry took second 19 seconds back.  She is a two-time Olympic trials marathon qualifier and a member of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.  Good company to be in!  Eric and Murdock had a great race running 6:35 pace and cracking the top 10.  Not bad for a 57 year old and a 13 year old dog.

Island running

On my way to Maine for the Longfellow Frostbite race I stopped at Mackworth Island to check out the trail.  It was a nice 1.5 mile (just a little short) with only a little mud and ice.  It seemed very popular as the lot was nearly full.  Got in my two loops with a quick visit to Gov. Baxter's pet cemetery.

Feeling down

Listening to Billy Bragg today and feeling down.  Not sure if this song makes me feel better or worse, but it really touches a nerve.

With a bunch of strangers who all share my name
Gathered at the graveside in the pouring rain
Never thought I'd find myself back here again
Yet, here I am standing in the lane
Got a lotta pieces missing in my past
Never really noticed time was moving so fast
So many questions that I wanted to ask
But I let all my chances slip past
They slip past
Pass it on, pass it on
Teach them the words of your song
Voices fall silent but memories live on
Those we remеmber are nevеr gone
Never gone
A wooden box of trinkets in the drawer by the bed
A dusty sheaf of letters from people now dead
A lock of golden hair cut from a baby's head
And so many things left unsaid
Be they sentimental or deeply profound
All the things we've hidden will one day be found
The riches of a family cannot be weighed in pounds
But in the stories that they can hand down
Hand 'em down
Pass it on, pass it on
Teach them the words of your song
Voices fall silent but memories live on
Those we remember are never gone
Pass it on, pass it on
Teach them the words of your song
Voices fall silent but memories live on
Those we remember are never gone
Never gone

Snow or no, we go!

I won free entry into all 6 of the "snow or no, we go" series when I won the Canterbury XC series last fall.  It has been a while since I last did a snowshoe race, it just wreaks havoc on my arthritic ankle.  Although I've done 126 snowshoe races, 121 of them were in a 15 year period (2000-2014).  I did 1 snowshoe race in 2016 and then 3 in 2017 and swore that I wouldn't do any more.  I gave away a few pair of my racing shoes and only held on to one good pair and a slightly broken pair. I did a cool snowshoe race in 2021 and it only set me back a week (hobbled along but managed to run). The free entry got me dusting off my snowshoes for another go.

Tom & Ellen Raffio were there when I rolled up a little before 9am.  I wanted plenty of time to get ready as getting geared up for snowshoe racing takes some extra time. I checked out the course map and noted that it ran some of the single-track I'd done before (but in the opposite direction) and some single-track I'd never done before.  I chatted up course designer Tom Walton at number pick-up, he'd marked the course the day before but they got a dusting of snow so it might not be easy to see the orange spray paint arrows.

I hit the road for a hilly 3 mile warm-up.  The road was a little sketchy with the dusting of snow making the downhill parts a bit worrisome.  I got back with 25 minutes to spare and spent the next 10 minutes getting into race gear and fitting the snowshoes.  I hoped most would be using snowshoes although the course could be managed in traction devices.  I headed out for a mile in the snowshoes and my ankle was already chatting loudly with me.  A sub-10 minute mile did not seem easy.  Conditions were not terrible with temps in the 30s and bright sun.  The course would be a mix of open fields and twisting single-track and footing would be ice, snow, and stretches of rock, roots and bare ground.  Not so much to be terrible, but enough to keep you concentrating!  Tom Raffio gave a little speech and mentioned that "it is impossible to get lost".  I told him I wasn't so sure about that.  Tom Walton then gave a short talk about how snowshoe racing is generally slower than traction devices (or trail shoes) and he hoped most would take the recommendation of using snowshoes.  Then it was time to go!

There were a couple of guys from Team Prospect Acres who looked strong including one in some fast looking mini-snowshoes (TSLs?). I figured I'd try to hang with whoever went out and then try to run the second lap faster than the first.  I got to the first turn in the lead and was not pushing the pace in the early going.  I could hear footsteps right behind me and just focused on relaxing and not slipping on the ice.  I aired it out a bit on the first long downhill and the footsteps faded away.  I upped the tempo a little bit figuring I'd get out of sight on the single-track.  The first section had a couple of stretches of bare ground but it wasn't too bad.  Then we hit the "new" section of single-track which had mostly good snow on it.  It was twisty and had some tough little climbs.  I was a bit shocked when I checked my watch (it beeps every 1/2 mile) and I'd done a hard 1/2 in 4:55!  Yikes.  On a sharp turn I saw that my pursuer had now closed back in on me, so much for slipping away.  I pushed a little on the climb back up to the starting field and then passed through the first lap in 15:40.

I really concentrated on pushing the pace the second lap.  The icy stuff was a bit chewed up from everyone running the first loop, but it wasn't too bad.  Knowing the loop and exactly how much was left helped.  I kept the effort steady and thanked the people I lapped who let me have the main part of the trail.  Well, maybe "thanked" is a stretch.  I tried to grunt thanks but it may have come out more of a grunt than a thanks.

I was a bit worried that I was being caught but couldn't do anything about it.  I pressed to the finish and was happy to find that I did beat my first lap time (by 24 seconds) with a 2nd lap of 15:16.  I'd held on for the win as well which was a bonus.

Full results (24 finishers - 14 more in the 1 lap version)

Looking back - Feb 2018

5 Years ago:  I only raced twice during this month, both a classic road race 😊.  I decided to give it a go at the Fudgcicle series 5k.  GLRR has been putting on these races since the 1980s.  It is a great winter series that is held no matter what the weather every weekend in January and February.  The suggested entry fee is $1 and you get a professionally timed race.  On this morning the roads were clear, temps were in the mid-20s, there was very little breeze, and a bright sun.  I was hoping to run right around 6:00s for the slightly long 5k course.  I was able to take 5th place in 5:56 pace.  No complaints!  Dave La had a nice run taking over a minute off his time from last week.  We finished the morning with a final lap around the course.

The following week I came back for the final Fudgcicle race of the year.  The weather was looking good so I was hoping to chip a few seconds off of my time from last week. The sun was out and temps were in the 40's and there was a little breeze but this looked like a good morning to race.  I caught up with an early leader at about 1/4 mile and moved into the lead just before we turned off the first road (less than 1/2 mile in).  I ended up taking first place in 18:16.  Dave and I teamed up to win the 50+ category in the Twosome and we also had the fastest time of the day by nearly 3 minutes.  Not bad for 2 guys with a combined age of nearly 108 years.

Looking back - Feb 2013

10 years ago:  I raced 6 times over the month including 3 snowshoe races in 24 hours.  I started the month at a New England Classic, the Lynn Stew Chase (02/03/13).  I had a good day, rolling along to a 2nd place finish ($25 cash prize) trailing only Jason Porter.  The following weekend I headed to Prospect Mountain (Woodford VT) for a 5.4 mile snowshoe race.  I got as close as 8 seconds behind Greg Hammet at the top of the climb, but he extended the lead to a minute on the downhill section.

The next weekend I got in a lot of snowshoe racing.  I started on 02/16/13 with a rare CMS hosted snowshoe race at Moore State Park (Paxton, MA).  The 3.5 mile course started with a loop around a big open field, Steve Dowsett (WRT) went out hard and in the first half mile I was 30 seconds back.  I’d stay that far back the entire race, taking 2nd place over 4 minutes ahead of third.

That evening I headed to Kingman Farm (Madbury, NH) for a night snowshoe race.  This race is a lot of fun (for a snowshoe race).  There is a totally different vibe when racing at night, in the woods, on snowshoes.  I was tired from the morning race.  It took me nearly a mile to get around to the fast starting Principe’s (dad & son), I think this would be the last time I’d beat DJ.  He is now knocking on the sub-4 minute mile door.  Anyway, I caught Ryan Welts and we battled for most of the way until he put 17 seconds on me in the last ½ mile.

The next morning it was off to Merrimack NH for the Horse Hill snowshoe race.  Jim Johnson of the hated BAA Unicorns was out of sight in the first stretch of trail.  Ryan Welts sat on me as we hammered along about the same distance behind JJ as we were ahead of the next guy.  This time I got the better of Ryan putting 6 seconds on him on the final downhill and flat ¼ mile to the finish.

Relays

I love running relay races! Relays are a great experience, bringing a team together.  I’ve always been a big advocate of team participation.  You get so much more out of racing as part of a team.

A couple of weeks ago I ran some unusual distances (for me) getting in a 4x200 for the first time and a 4x400 for the first time since High School.  I’ve done over 1500 races and only 85 have been relays.  I’ve been fortunate enough to race those relays from distances of 200 meters up to 14.6 miles.

The 4x440 is the most common distance for me to race in a relay with 19 times.  Basically my junior and senior year in high school I’d run the relay after doing either the mile or 2 mile.  The next most popular distance is 2.5 miles with 15 relays.  Most of those are Lynn Woods with a few “Moose Milers” relays thrown in.
