Snowshoe race

I was feeling flat, maybe from a long day of shoveling and sitting at the computer working on taxes.  There would be plenty of snow in Franklin NH for the “Snow or no, we go” finale, so I was in.  Since the race wasn’t until 10am I headed down to Chelmsford for an easy 5m run with Dave La (and Petey on the bike).  I thought the run was quicker than it turned out to be, never a good sign.  I arrived at Prospect Acres by 9am and it looked to be a great location for a snowshoe race.  The driveway was a bit tricky as it was about ¼ mile long and was icy and snowy.  By, 910am I was out for a 2 mile warm-up on the (hilly) local roads.  I felt a little better but still sluggish.  I quickly changed into snowshoes and headed out onto the course running a mile (the first ½ mile of the race out and back).  It was well packed by snowmobiles but a bit twisty and seemed to have a few waterbars that we’d have to navigate carefully.  The 2 mile loop would have about ¼ mile up, ¼ mile down, then a tough ½ mile climb and a ½ mile mixing up and flat before we’d loop a field and then it was mostly down for the final ½ mile.

I headed out in the lead but could hear 2nd place right behind me (and hear him as we all rang a cowbell about ¼ mile in).  I slowly pulled ahead and took a peek in the field at about 1.3 miles, and he was maybe 20 seconds back.  I felt like I was working the downhills pretty good but worried that I might be pushing too hard on the ups.  The second time around I listened for the bell but never heard it.  I was running a bit scared but also convinced myself that if I got to the field in first, I would be able to pick up the pace on the final downhill.  I started lapping people at 3 miles (I’d catch 18 of the 30 doing the single loop).  The surface was in good shape even in the second lap.  I had some trouble with people not understanding “on your left” but mostly was able to get around them.  I checked the time in the field and knew I had over 1 minute lead, so unless there was a disaster, I was going to be able to hold on for the win.  I pushed hard to the end despite ankles that were really feeling it on the downs.  Knowing this was the final snowshoe of the season made it a little easier to work to the finish.  I ended up taking the win in 34:37, 1:19 ahead of second place.

This was my third win in the series (6 races).  I got a chocolate milk and a clif bar and hit the road.  The series was a lot of fun. I’m glad I got to compete once at each of the race sites.  Tom and Ellen Raffio (and Tom Walton) have a great idea, run the races even if there is no snow, I hope it continues next year!

Snow or no, we go!

I won free entry into all 6 of the "snow or no, we go" series when I won the Canterbury XC series last fall.  It has been a while since I last did a snowshoe race, it just wreaks havoc on my arthritic ankle.  Although I've done 126 snowshoe races, 121 of them were in a 15 year period (2000-2014).  I did 1 snowshoe race in 2016 and then 3 in 2017 and swore that I wouldn't do any more.  I gave away a few pair of my racing shoes and only held on to one good pair and a slightly broken pair. I did a cool snowshoe race in 2021 and it only set me back a week (hobbled along but managed to run). The free entry got me dusting off my snowshoes for another go.

Tom & Ellen Raffio were there when I rolled up a little before 9am.  I wanted plenty of time to get ready as getting geared up for snowshoe racing takes some extra time. I checked out the course map and noted that it ran some of the single-track I'd done before (but in the opposite direction) and some single-track I'd never done before.  I chatted up course designer Tom Walton at number pick-up, he'd marked the course the day before but they got a dusting of snow so it might not be easy to see the orange spray paint arrows.

I hit the road for a hilly 3 mile warm-up.  The road was a little sketchy with the dusting of snow making the downhill parts a bit worrisome.  I got back with 25 minutes to spare and spent the next 10 minutes getting into race gear and fitting the snowshoes.  I hoped most would be using snowshoes although the course could be managed in traction devices.  I headed out for a mile in the snowshoes and my ankle was already chatting loudly with me.  A sub-10 minute mile did not seem easy.  Conditions were not terrible with temps in the 30s and bright sun.  The course would be a mix of open fields and twisting single-track and footing would be ice, snow, and stretches of rock, roots and bare ground.  Not so much to be terrible, but enough to keep you concentrating!  Tom Raffio gave a little speech and mentioned that "it is impossible to get lost".  I told him I wasn't so sure about that.  Tom Walton then gave a short talk about how snowshoe racing is generally slower than traction devices (or trail shoes) and he hoped most would take the recommendation of using snowshoes.  Then it was time to go!

There were a couple of guys from Team Prospect Acres who looked strong including one in some fast looking mini-snowshoes (TSLs?). I figured I'd try to hang with whoever went out and then try to run the second lap faster than the first.  I got to the first turn in the lead and was not pushing the pace in the early going.  I could hear footsteps right behind me and just focused on relaxing and not slipping on the ice.  I aired it out a bit on the first long downhill and the footsteps faded away.  I upped the tempo a little bit figuring I'd get out of sight on the single-track.  The first section had a couple of stretches of bare ground but it wasn't too bad.  Then we hit the "new" section of single-track which had mostly good snow on it.  It was twisty and had some tough little climbs.  I was a bit shocked when I checked my watch (it beeps every 1/2 mile) and I'd done a hard 1/2 in 4:55!  Yikes.  On a sharp turn I saw that my pursuer had now closed back in on me, so much for slipping away.  I pushed a little on the climb back up to the starting field and then passed through the first lap in 15:40.

I really concentrated on pushing the pace the second lap.  The icy stuff was a bit chewed up from everyone running the first loop, but it wasn't too bad.  Knowing the loop and exactly how much was left helped.  I kept the effort steady and thanked the people I lapped who let me have the main part of the trail.  Well, maybe "thanked" is a stretch.  I tried to grunt thanks but it may have come out more of a grunt than a thanks.

I was a bit worried that I was being caught but couldn't do anything about it.  I pressed to the finish and was happy to find that I did beat my first lap time (by 24 seconds) with a 2nd lap of 15:16.  I'd held on for the win as well which was a bonus.

Highway View Farm - Snow or no, we go

Last year I was fortunate enough to win the Canterbury XC race series and the prize was free entry to the "Snow or no, we go" series.  This five race series takes place at a few locations near Canterbury (2 at the Shaker Village).  Thank you to the Raffio's for putting on this series and for the freebie!  As the name indicates these races are held no matter what the conditions are.  Hopefully some will be snowshoe races (which is the primary thinking behind the series) but with the lack of snow and 50 degree weather (with heavy rain) the last couple of days there was no doubt this would be a trail race.

I wasn't sure about doing the race as my ankle has been feeling pretty lousy and the idea of uneven running had me concerned.  I started feeling pretty good late in the week, with a quick treadmill run on Thursday and a fast outside run on Friday.  After that I figured I'd just give it a shot.  The only goal would be to not get hurt, anything else would be a bonus.

I was one of the first to arrive, but the tent was set up and I quickly got my number.  Bumped into Tom Raffio who seemed pretty fired up about the race, a lot of positive energy!  I put on micro-spikes and headed out onto the course.  The dirt road to the cornfield was very icy (and had a big puddle about 50 meters into the course) and then I dipped down to the cornfield.  It was also very icy but mostly just icy crust.  Unfortunately, under the crust was a lot of water.  My feet were soak by 1/2 mile.  I'm glad I checked out the course as there were opportunities to avoid the worst of the puddles if you paid attention.  It was 30 degrees and snowing a bit but not terrible out there, the wind was a bit chilling.  I completed the 2 mile loop and chose to run back to the finish (to see how long one loop was, it was 2.35 miles) instead of continuing around again for the four mile course.  I did an out/back on the Northern Rail Trail (solid ice) as an add on to get in a four mile warm up.

I quickly changed into race gear (shorts and longsleeve with Delta Dental Singlet) and had enough time to put in another half-mile.  I chose to go with Inov-8 trail shoes with the micro-spikes.  It looked like a good turnout with maybe 50 doing either the 2+ mile or the 4+ mile course.  Kara Haas looked to be the main competition (she nearly beat me at the Millennium Mile).  We chatted briefly and her goal was the same as mine...don't get hurt!

Seemed like no one wanted to get on the starting line

Off we went, and one of the Prospect Acres Obstacle Course runners took it out.  It felt quick to me and I was in no rush, figuring I could always try to push it on the second lap.  I took the lead at 1/4 mile in and after 1/2 mile couldn't hear any pursuers.  I checked my watch every half mile and was happy with the effort and how even my splits were.  I started lapping runners by my second time around but found the second lap a bit tougher as my feet were really wet and that did not help with traction.  I looked back once as I turned into the cornfield and could see Kara just ahead of the guy who took it out.  The cornfield part was very rough so I returned my concentration to watching my footing.  It felt like I was giving a good effort, I was wheezing which meant I was pushing pretty hard.

I hit four miles in 27:25 and battled a 2 mile runner right to the finish.  I had just enough time to hightail it to my car and grab my camera to get the next 3 runners coming in.  After that, Kara joined me for a 2.4 mile warm-down ON THE ROAD.  Kara may have talked me into doing the USATF NE masters mile at the end of the month since it is part of the All-Terrain Series.  Time will tell.

Granite State Snowshoe champs

Granite State snowshoe championships -  I’ve only done one snowshoe race this season mostly in deference to my ankles which do not deal well with the added stress of uneven terrain and additional weight of the shoes.  Since I’m planning on doing the All-Terrain series I felt it’d be a good idea to get another SS race under my belt before the Northeast Championships (03/12 @ Prospect Mountain).  I broke/cracked a rib on Wednesday and was pretty sore (strained a triceps muscle and did something to my shoulder from the fall but neither of those hurt as much as the rib).  I was able to run so I figured I’d also be able to race.
The 100 mile drive to Waterville Valley was easy enough although the wind meant 2 hands on the wheel the entire drive.  There wasn’t much snow on the ground south of Concord but steadily increased.  I arrived a little more than an hour before the 11:00am start time and the temps were around 10 degrees and the wind was anywhere from 15-25 mph.  Chris Dunn had devised a really nice 5.3 mile course that was mostly in the woods (and all on wide groomed trail) so we’d mostly be out of the wind.  I checked out the course map and found it hard to follow but committed the elevation profile to memory.  It looked like about 700’ of climb and most of that was from 1 mile to 3, after that there would be a couple of “bumps” but mostly downhill to the finish.  I don’t like “fast” snowshoe racing, I prefer a good grind at 10-15 minute miles but conditions and course dictate the race and this would be a fast one.
I got in an easy 2 mile road run for a warm-up then tried to figure out how many layers to wear.  Teammate Tim Van Orden had four layers on so I felt okay about my 3 light layers.  Tim and Jamie Woolsey had raced in the North American championships less than 48 hours before this race!  Only 42 lined up for the start, maybe due to the Winter Wild race, Maine SS race, and Mt Washington race all on the same weekend?
It felt like a cross-country race start as everyone seemed to fly out.  Maybe I was a bit tentative.  I counted 15 people in front of me a minute into the race.  Soon after I passed Jamie then got up to sometimes teammate Leslie O’Dell (she runs for another team during snowshoe season).  By the first beep on my Garmin (1/2 mile) I was in 10th place and starting to settle in.  Tim was in the lead with fellow CMS runner Ed Sheldon along with Josh Fields and Phil Erwin, both from acidotic Racing.  Ed and Phil were in battle for the New Hampshire series title.  Tivo broke it open as the real climbing started before the mile.  I moved up on the climb passing Phil as he fell off from the aggressive early going.  By 1.25 I was 20 seconds behind Matt Picard and just before the 2 mile mark I’d moved up to 6th place and was 30 seconds behind Josh.  Matt and Bobby McDonoghue were back and forth and at the top of the climb I’d closed to 12 seconds.
I was feeling pretty good on the climbs but felt I was doing my best running on the flats (of all things).   Tim and Ed were now long gone out of sight but I could see Josh up ahead and on a couple of tight turns I couldn’t see the next guy behind me.  We hit the last real bump at 3.75 miles and I was 24 seconds behind Josh and had closed to 5 seconds behind Matt.  I would not get any closer.  Josh pulled away and Bobby and Matt did the same especially over the last ½ mile where I was really starting to feel it and just had nothing left.  I was happy to hold it together and cross the line in 6th place.  Tim took the win and Ed wrapped up the Granite State series with his 2nd place finish.

Whitaker Woods - All time

Race director Kevin Tilton came up with the “all-time” stats for the Whitaker Woods snowshoe race.  It is hard to compare efforts at a snowshoe race since conditions (depth, firmness of snow) make a huge difference.  I’ve run Whitaker 5 of the 7 years it has been held and in those years conditions were very similar (FAST).  One year was had a shorter course so those times are not included.  All of my times are within 59 seconds.  If nothing else it shows the depth of the field at this year’s race.  My 29:10 in 2013 was good enough for 2nd place, this year it would have only placed 13th.

Teammates Jim Pawlicki (40+), Ed Sheldon (50+) and Paul Bazanchuk (60+) set course records in their respective categories.

Whitaker Woods Snowshoe Race

Whitaker Woods

I only did one snowshoe race last year (and none in 2015) so I was a bit nervous about heading up to North Conway for the Whitaker Woods 4 mile snowshoe race.  Not so much nervous about the race but about how my ankles would handle snowshoeing.  CMS teammate Jim Pawlicki decided to join in for the fun so we met up at the Newburyport park and ride and carpooled the 120 miles to N. Conway.

We arrived with plenty of time to spare, race prep takes a lot longer in winter, and were happy to see a few CMS runners already preparing to warm-up.  The course was firmly packed so Paul Bazanchuk joined us for a course preview (wearing kahtoolahs rather than snowshoes).  It was cold out there, just single digits during the warm-up but sunny and no wind.  Great for snowshoe racing through the woods.

After the warm-up I switched into race gear and headed out on snowshoes for another ½ mile to get used to being back in snowshoes.  Kevin Tilton called a record field to the start line (124 finishers!) and off they went at a sprint.  Nacho Hernando was out of sight right away running sub 6 minute miles.  I found myself inside of the top 20 but only just.  It felt very fast and I felt flat.  The 5% grade from ½ mile to the mile up Vista Trail brought a few back and the second climb from 1.3 to 1.6 brought back a couple more but that would be it for me.

Over the last 2.3 miles I’d close on the two guys in front of me then lose ground and repeat but I never quite caught up to them.  I ran hard throughout but felt like I was swimming in quicksand.  You can’t really compare snowshoe times (even on the same course) because the conditions make a huge difference.  The conditions on this day were fast, but I don’t recall conditions being all that much slower in any other years.  My 29:18 isn’t my best and it wasn’t my worst either.  CMS had a very good day with Jim Pawlicki winning the 40+, Ed Sheldon taking the 50+ and Paul Bazanchuk first in the 60+.

My ankles were pretty sore after (arthritis) so I’m not sure how much snowshoe racing I’ll do this year.  Hoping to do at least a couple of races!

Whitaker Woods Snowshoe race

I’m looking forward to snowshoe racing at Whitaker woods tomorrow.  Kevin Tilton always does a nice job and the post-race bagels are huge!  I missed the last two years but have done okay at Whitaker.  It will be interesting to see how my ankles handle snowshoe racing.
