40 years ago: I continued my freshman year of indoor track at U-Lowell with three races in February 1983. I started the month (02/05/83) with a win in the 2 mile at a tri-meet versus Colby and Bowdoin in Waterville ME. I ran a “controlled pace” taking the win by one second over teammate David Quintal, 9:11 to 9:12. A week later (02/12/83) I ran the 2 mile again, this time at the Eastern championships at Southern Connecticut State University. I took third place in a personal best of 8:55.5 with splits of: 68/66/66/67/67/66/71/67 and picked up some really nasty blisters that hampered my training. I finished the month in Lewiston Maine at the New England championships (02/26/83). My 14:35.8 5th place in the 5,000 meters broke the existing school record (and as such was also a Freshman record).
