Dan and I are working on speed with our long range goal to be prepared for the Masters Outdoor Track Nationals in August. Dave Quintal joined us for our first foray onto the Phillips Andover track this year.
We warmed up with a short 2 mile run from the cemetery to the track and then switched into racing flats and did another mile with 4 sets of pick-ups. The workout would be 6 time 800 with 400 rest. The temperature was just about ideal (low 50’s) but the wind was 15-20 mph which would make for tough running on the first and third straight. The workout was the same one we did as our first workout of the year back in January (at the Hampshire Dome).
The goal was to hit right around 2:40 and we’d alternate taking the lead which always makes the workout a bit easier. Dan bailed on the fourth one for a visit to the woods and David stopped after the fourth one as he is still coming back from injury and didn’t want to push his luck (smart move). I felt okay but not great, the ones I led were the slowest ones we did. All in all it was a good start. Comparing the workout to the one from 3 months ago we averaged about 1.5 seconds faster per interval and our rest was shorter.
