I’d finally started to feel like I was fully recovered from
surgery leading up to the USATF New England ½ marathon championships at New
Bedford. I had some concerns about my calf which had been bothering me but knew
that if it held up I could have a decent run at New Bedford.
I picked up CMS teammate Dave Lapierre and we got the 100
mile drive done with no issues. We arrived 90 minutes before the start and
headed right to the YMCA to pick up our numbers. As always at USATF gran prix
races there were plenty of familiar faces. I was especially happy to hear from
team captain Jim Pawlicki that John Gillis was a late entrant. That meant we
had six guys in the 50+ (five score), as Dave noted if you took into account the
various injuries we only had 3 or 4 totally healthy guys. My plan was to not
hold back and just hope that my calf cooperated. I went out for an easy 1 mile
warm-up then tried to figure out the correct amount of layers to wear. It was
only in the low 30’s and there was a pretty strong wind blowing.
With 10 minutes to go we headed over to the line which is
very hard to get to as they close down the street and make you force your way
through 2,500 people to get anywhere near the front of the line. I moved my way
to five or six rows behind the line figuring I should be in the top 150 if all
went well. We took off into a headwind or cross wind and it took me four
seconds to get across the line. After that it was pretty easy to find a safe
spot to run. I saw Jim Pawlicki up ahead and caught John Gillis around ½ mile
(I reminded him it was a long way to go). That downhill start can tempt you to
go out to hard. It took me most of the first mile to get by most of the women.
I was 6 flat at the mile and felt pretty good. I locked my sights on Chris
Lawrence (BAA) one of the top 50+ runners and convinced myself to stick with him
through the “hills” and get to 4 miles then reassess. We clicked off a couple
of low 6’s and then slowed a bit to 6:14 on the biggest hill of the course (84
foot climb in ½ mile).
At that point I timed how far Jim and Arthur Besse were ahead
and it was 12 seconds. At that point two guys from “Wamp” stormed by. I locked
onto them along with a couple of GLRR guys and we started running a bit faster.
This part of the course usually has a tailwind and is slightly downhill, this
year there was a lot of cross-wind. We ran three 5:51 miles during this
stretch. I’d passed Arthur and by 7 miles caught up to Jim. We ran together
for 2 miles but I was hanging on. I really wanted to stay with Jim on the
windiest section of the course but he was just a bit too fast for me. The
10th mile was tough with a strong wind, I ran 6:19.9 and started
calculating if I could break 1:20. The fourth place woman was being paced (I
think) by a teammate but I couldn’t seem to tuck behind him. He stopped a
couple of times to tie his shoes then sprinted back up. I held it together over
the last 5k although the second biggest hill on the course (81’ in ½ mile) at 12
miles really hurt. I slowed a lot, but tried to rebound at the top knowing I
was going to be close to 1:20. I kicked it in and crossed in 1:19:45 (1:19:41
chip time).
I was very happy to find that I’d taken 5th in the
50+ with my new 50+ personal best. Dave La also got a 50+ personal best and our
team did well taking 5th in the 50+ (an improvement over our
7th place at the 5k championships). The open team and masters teams
both took 2nd place.
