10 years ago (May 2007): I’m not sure what I was thinking this month as I raced six times including back to back days. I put in 360 miles for the month (about 12m per day) with no days off. I started the month (05/03) at “Breakneck Hill” for a race that teammate Steve “Petey” Peterson was directing. The lunchtime jaunt attracted 8 runners for the 3 loop 6km course. It was a nice hilly trail with great footing. I ran with Petey for the first 1.5 loops then picked it up a little for a win in 21:24.
Three days later (05/06) I headed out to Westford MA for the USATF NE 5km road champs. The ‘rolling’ course was mostly down for the first ½ then (of course) mostly up for the second half. I ran splits of 5:06, 5:19, and 6:09 (1.1m) for a 16:34 which got me 53rd place and 12th in the 40+. Kent Lemme was top master in 15:40 and teammate Dan Verrington ran a solid 15:57. I recall that teammate Larry Sayers stating that he would “jog through with you” (me). He “jogged” to a 16:25.

The following weekend (05/12 & 05/13) I doubled up. I figured that the uphill 10k race wouldn’t beat me up too much and I could come back the next day and do a 5k. On Saturday I trekked up to Ripton VT for the Green Mountain Hill Climb (I think it was last held in 2009). This was a pretty cool 10k that started in Ripton and finished at the height of land at Middlebury Gap. It climbed 1,200’, most of which was over the last 2 or 3 miles. I went out with local favorite Rob Lukaskiewicz figuring I could out-climb him when it got steeper. We had a nice tail wind the entire way and I stuck close until the climb. At that point Rob Pulled away and put nearly 30 seconds on me over the last 2 miles. So much for outclimbing him! I ended up in second place in 39:05.
The following day I ran the Mother’s day 5k in Concord. I ran with Scott Clark for the first kilometer then he just buried me. I took 3rd in 17:03, 20 seconds behind Scott and another 35 seconds behind the winner.
The next weekend (05/20) it was time for another USATF NE road championship, this time at the rarely run 12km distance. I was aiming for a top 10 finish in the masters (40+) and just missed placing 11th. Danny V topped the masters running an excellent 5:18 pace for the 7.4 mile distance.

The final weekend had me doing another double, this time a Saturday/Monday which may be worse than back-to-back races (delayed onset soreness?). Again I was thinking that an uphill race wouldn’t beat me up badly. On Saturday I took 7th place at the Wachusett Mountain race, back when they still ran the “traditional” 4.3 mile course to the summit. Teammate Paul Low won in 25:44 and I crossed the line 2.5 minutes later. Two days later I went to Henniker NH for the Durgin Memorial 5k. The course was hilly (rolling) and out/back which is great for checking where the competition is. I pulled away at the start and heard local favorite (Mark Hecox – Henniker NH) slowly fall back. At the turn he was still relatively close but I managed to increase my lead a bit on the way back taking the win in 17:16, Hecox took 2nd in 17:54 in a field of 254.
