The GBTC hosted the first race in the New England Cross-Country grand prix. I got there early but the lines were really long at registration (I had pre-entered, but there wasn't a separate line). Anyway, time was short so I booked it out onto what I thought was the course. I did run the course but not in the order I'd race it. No need to worry I knew there would be people to follow.
I met up with teammates Danny V and Arthur Besse as we stayed loose as the start was held up a few minutes for the kids award ceremony. It looked like a quad meet with BAA, HFC, and GLRR fielding teams (and the rest of us being the fourth team). Mike Galoob took it out easy (for him) and there was a pretty big pack as we hit the woods and some narrow trail with some roots to navigate. I found myself in 5th or 6th place in the early going.
Mostly I was focused on Mark Reeder since he was the top 50+ runner. Titus Mutinda (sub 5 mile earlier this summer) looked strong as he went by me around the mile (541). I latched onto him and we would close on Reeder then lose ground again. At about 1.5 Arthur went by and I tried to go with him, I couldn't but he did drag me back up to Titus and a few steps behind Mark. At 2 miles (1126) I was feeling like I was all-out but as the footing got rough again I was able to get around Titus. He went back around me with a half-mile to go and I had no answer for that move. Finally the finish was in sight and Jason Porter (former CMS runner now BAA) blew by like I was standing still. Nothing I could do, I was already going full tilt.
No complaints with a top 10 finish and a 3rd in the 50+! Next up will be road 5k, then road 10k before back on the trails.
