Cranmore history (mine)

This weekend I’ll be attempting the Cranmore mountain race for the 13th time since 1996.  The race has been the National Championships a number of times and the course has been everything from a 3 mile with 1,200’ of climb (with a free ride down the Gondola) to a quad busting (and lung busting) three loop version.  One year it was three loops and it started at the TOP.  Insane!

I’ve only won the race once, in 1996 I was able to pull away from training partner Dan Verrington about half-way up the climb and secure the win.  I got a pair of racing snowshoes for the win & course record.  You can probably guess the years it was a national championships by what my place was.  The only one that doesn’t fit the pattern is 2014 when I WALKED the course in order to get my “Goat” status.  I did not run a step of it that year but some of my walking on the steep stuff was very fast.
