Lynn Woods Cross-Country

This would be my 13th time racing at Lynn Woods but most of those were in the very popular 4x2.5 relay which closes out the series (I’m hoping to do that again this year as well).  I went right from work to Lynn since traffic can be hinky.  I was VERY early but was not the first person to arrive.  Chris Smith (SRR) stopped by and we chatted for a bit before he headed out to mark the course.  Later CMS teammate William Jackson arrived and we discussed a warm-up.  He was heading out for 8 miles which would be a bit much for me.  I was already feeling tired from sitting around in the car (I hate evening races) so a longer warm-up would be a good idea.  We settled on meeting after he’d done a 3 mile loop.  I got signed up and prepared all of my race gear before meeting up for the warm-up.  It was nice to have someone to socialize with for a bit as most of my training has been on my own.  We got in a nice 5 miles on carriage roads.  After that I changed into race gear and Inov-8 shoes and headed out for another mile.  I watched the long race start then had 5 minutes for some last chance water, glance at the course map, and line up.

The kids race starts with the short race so there were a lot of little kids on the line.  Only one of them took it out super-hard and he stayed to the side so when he (inevitably) slowed up he didn’t slow anyone down.  One other guy took it out pretty hard and I tried to lock onto him.  As the grade increase (10% for a bit) he accelerated.  I did not panic, it was early.  I caught back up to him as it flatten before ½ mile and went by him.  My hope was to really gap him on the tough ¼ mile climb once we turned onto “Loop Road”.  I was wheezing from the effort and dripping from the humid conditions.  6:35 at the mile felt a heck of a lot harder than the time.  I snuck a peek as the trail circled around the Steel Tower.  My guess was about a 20 seconds lead and my hope was that I was a better downhill runner.  The footing isn’t the greatest (lots of loose rock) but better than technical single-track (at least better for me).  Even with the downhill there are a couple of “bumps” that really hurt in the last half-mile or so.  I passed a lot of people who were still heading out and then started catching the little kids who were doing and out/back 1.2 mile race.  One kid looked back and took off at a full sprint.  I caught him soon after and offered encouragement as I went by.  The last little part is tough with the only trail section, it is only 100 meters or so but tricky with roots and rocks and tired legs.  I just made sure to not get hurt then kicked for the line.  My hope was to run around 6 minute pace so I was close to my goal and I’ll certainly take a win.
