Lynn Woods relay

2018 LYNN WOODS 10 MILE RELAY     AUGUST 22, 2018 – 90 teams

On race day morning it absolutely poured rain, then it cleared and looked like it’d be a nice night for running.  I carpooled with CMS 50+ teammate Dan Verrington and when we arrived at the Lynn Woods reservation the skies opened up and it poured again.  After the rain the humidity level still hung around 100%, it was very warm and very uncomfortable.  After checking in with Dave Quintal (soaked from getting caught in the rain) and Joe Shairs we headed out for our warm-up.  A group warm-up is tough as we are all starting at different times but Dan was doing the second leg and I was lead off so it timed out okay.  The course was in decent shape despite the rain.  The big puddles could be avoided and there wasn’t much mud.

I switched into my Inov-8 trail shoes and headed out for another mile.  I didn’t feel very good.  I was worried about my shin which has been lousy since the Londonderry race last weekend.  Ninety teams lined up and with a “on your marks” and the ringing of the cow bell we were off.  I caught an elbow from someone right away (maybe a Chelsea HS XC runner?) and as we started climbing I was not in the top 10 (11th place).  Chris Keeley (WRCR 50+) ambled by me soon after as I settled into the pace that felt just a little too fast.  I caught a couple of guys in that first half mile and then as we headed downhill into the turn I caught a couple more.  Then the worst climbing started.  I moved into 8th place right at the start of the Goat Path (single-track tough uphill section).  I was behind my goal time at the mile and even slower at the top of the Goat Path at 1.5 miles.  There was a group of guys not too far in front including Keeley who was moving through the group.  I kept focused and tried to close on the mostly downhill last mile.  I was wheezing which is a sure sign that I was working hard (despite what my watch might say).  I caught one more guy with about 50 meters to go but he was able to out-lean me at the line.  He had an amazing bout of throwing up after that, hate to see anyone puke but great to see someone pushing their limits like that.  Somehow I was left out of the results and when they put me back in I was given a time 5 seconds behind the guy I crossed the line with.

I can’t say I was happy with the time (15:10) as I’d run 14:44 last year.  I guess it was a decent time given the night since it was the 15th fastest leg time and 2nd fastest for a 50+.  Our squad had a good night taking 5th place overall and topped the 50+ category.  The CMS 40+ team took 4th place overall and first in the 40+.  I got in a nice warm-down including some with Jim Pawlicki as we went out on the course to cheer people on.  This is a fun event that draws a faithful crowd who come back every year.  I look forward to coming back next year to take another crack at the 50+ team record.
