November 1988

30 Years ago = Nov. 1988 – I started off the month straining my hamstring and missing four days. I was pretty disappointed with how things went after that. I finished 12th at the New England Athletic Congress XC championships in Smithfield RI running 32:19 for the 10km course. On Thanksgiving I headed into Boston for the Jordan Marsh 5 mile race which attracted a field of 2,400. I had a terrible day finishing 12th in 25:30. Three days later I had a decent run at the Lowell Elks half-marathon running a 1:09:11 for the win despite getting badly blistered feet. The Elks course would become a staple of my training as the miles were marked. When preparing for marathons I’d do tempo runs on the Elks course (as fast as 5:10 pace for 10 miles!).
