Years ago – April 2005:
I was slowly increasing my mileage during this month and mixing in some
racing. Nothing all that impressive but I was out there trying. Really
that is all we can ever do. I started the month at the Winners Circle 4
mile and was well under my goal of breaking 6:00 pace with a 10th
place finish. A week later I ran an evenly paced 5k race (529/531/534) to
take 5th place and 2nd 40+ at the Girls Inc 5k. The
following week I had a terrible run at the Groton 5k taking 9th
place (and feeling awful) running a slow 17:21. Although I did pick up $25 for
my top finish in the 40+ age group. I closed out the month with a rare
trip to Cambridge for the weekly Fresh Pond 2.5 mile. This race is a
classic going back to the 1970s. World class runners have done this race
(for example the fastest known women’s times, are held by Lynn Jennings (2.5M)
and Cathy O’Brien (5M). Their times, 12:04 and 25:29). Teammates Dan
Verrington and Jim Pawlicki joined me. Well, they joined me for the
warm-up and warm-down. They ended up in a close battle with Dan taking
the win, I came in 33 seconds later getting out-kicked at the end for fourth
place.
