April 1990:
I’m not sure why, but I only raced once during this month. My training was
going well, and I was doing speed-workouts but just not racing much. I tried to
make it count with a fast road 10k on 04-08-1990 at the Milk Run in
Boston. Conditions were perfect and the field was very fast (there was a lot of
money up for grabs). The race was won in 28:36 and I took 14th place
in 29:52. I had a good battle with future teammate Eric Morse who outkicked me. I’m not sure how I got into the
race but I was granted “elite” status. It was kind of cool getting to
hang out in the elite athlete area prior to the race. I think Artie
Demers snuck in with me as my “coach”. We were both impressed by the
lovely Uta Pippig. She smiled and said “hello” and both Artie and I claim
she was talking specifically to just one of us.
