Fifteen years ago (June 2005): I raced four times
over this month. All of the racing was of the “mountain” variety. I
was still on a come-back after missing 6 weeks at the end of 2004 into 2005
with a torn hip socket ligament. I started the month with 06/05/05 at the
Pack Monadnock 10 mile. I did not feel good on this very hot
day. It would reach into the 90’s in the afternoon and was well into the
80’s during the race. I ended up running alone most of the race.

The following weekend (06/11/05) I took on Mt
Ascutney on another hot and humid day. Nothing of note in my training
log except “dizzy and numb fingers”. I ran alone for the entire race, 2+
minutes behind 5th place and 1:30 ahead of 7th.
Eric Morse was top 40+ with an impressive 29:50. CMS runners took the top
6 spots.

Next up was the Mt Washington road race
on 06/18/05. I had a rough start (didn’t pass Petey until 2 miles) but
was only passed by 2 people in the entire race (both Livingston
brothers). I was just out of reach of the top two ladies who had an epic
duel the entire way. I had a front row seat for a race that wasn’t settled
until the final 200 meters. CMS had a fine day setting a new open team
record and masters team record.

The final race of the month was the Northfield
Mountain race which was the USATF NE mountain running championships. I
pulled double duty as the race director and racing it. Richard Bolt and I
set up the course the day before (over 2 hours of running). The field was
quite deep as this was a selection race for the USA mountain team. For the race
I spent the first two laps running behind Chris Lundy, she would end up 2nd
overall in the 2 lap women’s race taking the top USA spot (behind Anna
Pichrtova). I ran pretty steady and thought I had a chance at Dan
Verrington for top 40+ but he ran just hard enough to beat me.
