Looking back - 30 years ago

30 Years ago (Oct 1990):  This month was all about preparing for the Columbus Marathon I’d be attempting to run a sub-2:20 and qualify for the 1992 Olympic trials.  I had weeks of 114, 112 before having some leg issues that caused me to miss a couple of days (the final straw was a 2x 2mile workout in 939 & 940 two days after a 30 mile long run.  I rebounded with a 90 mile week 2 weeks before the marathon.  I started the month out with the Hollis NH Applefest half-marathon (10/06/90).  Hollis had some decent prize money and usually had a solid field (CMS would focus on this race).  It was windy and warm (72 at the start and 79 at the finish).  I didn’t note much of anything in my training log.  The course dropped in the first 10k then had some tough climbs in the second half.  I hit 10k in 30:35 and came back with a 32:30 for a course record 1:06:31 and took home $600 for the effort.  The following weekend (10/08/90) I used the Baystate Marathon as my final long run before Columbus.  Petey and I did a 3 mile warm-up before I headed to the start.  I ran a conservative 68:30 through 10 miles and 68:20 for the next ten miles before upping the pace a little to finish in 2:58:36. Teammate Mike Woodman took the win in the half-marathon with a 1:10:50.
