Trick or Trot 3k: There still aren’t a lot of choices if you want to race and I wanted to race this weekend. 3Km (1.86 miles) is not the ideal distance for me, it is just too short and fast. I need a few miles to get up to full-speed. I figured it’d be a good idea to get in some speed before the ½ marathon so off I went to Manchester. I did a short speed workout during the week and Doug DeAngelis joined me, after the workout he decided to do the 3k as well! We planned on meeting up for a warm-up but didn’t connect so I hit the road on my own to try and figure out the newly configured course. Fortunately Manchester did not get snow (2+ inches in Haverhill) but there were a couple of icy spots and the finishing chute had a lot of slippery leaves. I did another mile with some strides and then headed to the start corral. Doug was seeded one spot ahead of me so he’d be 10 seconds in front. The first ½ mile was pretty tough with a bunch of turns and almost all of the climb. At about 1km we did a 180 degree turn around a cone and I counted Doug at about 8 or 9 seconds up on me. Suddenly he started coming back and by the mile I’d caught him (he was not having a good day). I went by and focused on catching the young kid ahead of me. I got him with about 600 meters to go but he went into a furious kick and was gone. I felt like the effort was good but had hoped to run faster. The course was short but anyone’s guess exactly how short (I got 1.80 on Garmin but it isn’t particularly accurate with all of the tall buildings). I’ll take it as I head into a (hopefully) busy November of racing!
