40 Years ago – June 1982: My first post-high school race (and my only race in June of 1982) was a 3,000 meter steeplechase at BC Summer Series. I went to the meet planning on running 5,000 meters but found out that they alternated the 5 with a steeple and that week was the steeple. I was there so I figured I’d give it a shot. I recall a few moments of terror in the early going when the steeple barrier seemed very high and nearly surprised me as I was in the back of a group. I made it through without getting hurt and set a meet record for juniors (18 and under) running my first and last steeple in 10:16.
