Looking back: September 1992

30 Years ago:  I covered 430 miles in September of 1992 and raced five times.  On 09/07 I went to the New Haven 20km and spent most of the first 8.5 miles running alone, despite a field of over 1,800 runners.  With 5km splits of 15:00, 15:26, and 15:19 I ran a personal best at 15km (45:45) and passed the 10-mile mark in another PR of 49:05.  Along the way I moved up from 15th place and my final 5k of 15:08 got me to 7th place and a PR of 1:00:53.  Five days later I shifted gears and ran the long (17.5 miles), hilly, rough Wapack trail race.  The course went from the XC ski area at Windblown south to Wattatic Mountain and continued down Wattatic to the access road before turning and returning.  The descent off of Wattatic was bone jarring and the climb back to the summit was brutal.  This was the second time I’d done the race, so I went out conservatively.  I hit the turn in 1:11:35 then picked it up for the return but the time didn’t show that as I came back in 1:12:33.  My 2:24 was the course record lasted for a number of years before being broken.  They no longer do the 17.5 race as they can’t start/finish at Windblown.  A few days later I hit the Pinkerton track for a workout for four times a mile at 5:00 with 400 rest.  I was a step under 5’s and felt this was a good sign with the upcoming races.  Next up was the Alamo Alumni 5 mile in Boston.  I nearly missed the start due to traffic and ended up running to registration in my race gear then heading directly to the line and racing.  I got into the lead at four miles but then got outkicked and ended up in third place with a 23:48 effort.  A week later (09/26) I did the first of two races over the weekend running a 15:11 at the U-Lowell Alumni cross-country race (finishing in second place).  The next day I won the Fallon Five in Worcester running with Francis Burdett for the first 3 miles then throwing in a 4:45 and 4:48 final two miles to get the win in 24:25.
