Looking back: September 2012

10 Years ago: I raced early and late during September of 2012 and in-between I travelled to Africa and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.  To say the least it was an interesting month.  I started the month with the St Charles 5k in Portsmouth (which served as the NH 5k champs).  I was hoping to run under 17 minutes on this pretty flat loop course.  I was in a group most of the way which helped and got as high as third place but lost two spots from 3 miles to the finish line.  I did meet my goal running a 16:53.  Four days later (09/07) I ran the Friendly Kitchen 5k in Concord NH.  It was pretty warm and I felt tired but still managed to take the lead in the first mile and then gapped the field, going on to win in 17:36.  After that I was off to Africa.  Due to the remoteness and safety reasons (wild animals) I missed 7 days of running during our 2 weeks.  Once back I only had a few days before the USATF New England 5k championships.  A few days before the race I did a short workout during lunch which included a hard mile in 5:42.  I was hoping I’d be able to do three of those in a row in the race.  Nothing of note from the race except I exceeded my goal and ran a 17:12 which was good enough for 17th in the 40+.
