40 Years ago – December 1982: I kicked off my freshman year of indoor track with a race on our “home” track (we did all of our workouts at the nice facility at Tufts University). We had a quad meet against Tufts, Fitchburg, and Westfield. It was an interesting track back then with half of it in a “tunnel”. I ran the 2-mile running an evenly paced race hitting the mile in 4:38 and winning in 9:18.8 which was just a few seconds shy of my indoor personal best. I ran a 63 last 400 to out leg my teammates. I believe we swept the 2-mile. We ended up taking the meet topping Tufts by a mere 1.5 points. A week later I ran the mile at a dual meet against Bates in Lewiston Maine which is a heck of a long way to go for 4+ minutes of racing. I ended up finishing 2nd in 4:21.8 which was a 7 second PR for me. We easily won the meet 99 to 39.
