USATF 5m history

I forgot to post this last week prior to the Ollie race (USATF NE 5m championship). Justin Fyffe became just the 7th CMS runner to take the New England title with his third place overall finish.

The Grand Prix (1985-2009) has had a 5 mile or 8 km as part of the series every year from 1987 to present. During that time Ollie has hosted the championship six times (2004-present). Rojack’s (Attleboro) hosted the championship (1997-2003 & 1994) eight times. Riverside (Agawam) hosted three times and a mix of other races completed the 22 times it has been contested.

CMS has won the team championship eleven times. The BAA has won nine, having won every year since 2000. The BRC and GLRR have both won once. CMS holds the team record with an impressive 1:59:54 from 1992 for an average of 23:59 (4:48 pace) per scoring team member.

In 1996 CMS placed all five scoring members in the top five overall and took seven of the top eight places. In that race Eric Morse finished 6th overall in 24:45 and did not score for the team. Another impressive performance was 1992’s when the top 3 CMS were under 24 minutes, the fourth scorer in 24:02 and final scoring place was 24:43. In an unusual twist…in 1987 most of the team raced the Plymouth to Provincetown relay the previous week and had trouble securing a fifth man. Team manager Don Drewniak was the final scoring member in 31:33, I believe that was the only time Drewniak scored for the Open men’s team in a Grand Prix competition.

The last time CMS took the team title was 1999 when Mark Donahue led the team (and set a CMS 40+ record) running 24:24. Rich Bolt was the sixth man in 25:05 and 14 CMS runners came in under 26:00.

CMS runners have been the New England champion six times. The last time was Scott Bagley (24:12) in 1996. Mark Donahue won twice, taking the honor in 1989 & 1990 in 24:14 and 23:46 respectively. Mike Nahom won in 1995 in 23:59. Dave Dunham and Larry Sayers both took the NE title while placing third overall in 1993 and 1991 respectively. Dunham ran 24:00, and Sayers ran 23:01 (short course).
