I really wanted to run fast at this 10km. The course is slightly rolling and there are plenty of tangents to cut. I had good luck at this race back in 2009 running a 35:17 when they hosted the USATF NE championships. RD Wes Lassen offered some team entries so I was definitely up for this. I had planned on dropping my mileage this week and resting...but while on vacation I just couldn't help but run a lot (96 mile week). I was back from Colorado on Saturday night and off with Dan Verrington and David Quintal early Sunday morning.
We gathered up Joe Donnelly and hit the course and put in 3+ miles. I was not feeling good. I'd woken up with a sinus headache each of the last few mornings and my throat was still lousy from whatever I was still sick from. I pushed that to the back of my mind and got my racing flats on and headed to the line. Dan, DQ, and I are all in about the same shape so it looked to be an interesting race. Dan ran a 10 mile trail race yesterday but he has this uncanny ability to race multiple days (despite his advanced years).
As we headed out Dan hooked up with Joe and DQ and I were just a step back at the mile (5:31). I was a bit surprised that we were "slow" despite a tailwind and the downhill start. I was hoping for a 40+ PR (34:28) but knew that the wind would make for a tough second half of the race. Dan and Joe slowly moved ahead and DQ and I hit 2 miles in 11:01 (5:30). Soon after I gapped David and closed on Dan. I hit three miles in 16:26 and was very happy with the 5:25 split on one of the "rolly" parts of the course. Joe was just a couple of seconds up at 5k and I went by Dan just after. Dan said "go get 'em" as I went by but about a quarter mile later he went by me like I was standing still. By four miles, 22:09 (5:43) Dan had put three seconds on me and all of us were running alone into the windiest part of the course. The gap stayed the same as I hit five miles in 27:49 (5:40) which tied my PR I set earlier this year, I was working as hard as possible and hoping that I could reel Dan back in by 6. I kept wondering when the 10 mile race would finally hit him (it didn't). With about 1/2 mile to go I started to close on Dan and finally got him on the last uphill of course. I hit six miles in 33:33 (5:44) just a stride or two up on Dan and I pushed as hard as I could on the downhill and flat. I hit the finish (actually two strides beyond the SECOND timing mat) in 34:41 missing my PR by 13 seconds.
Our team had a solid run, just missing beating GBTC in the open and taking the masters team title. We did beat GBTC in total age of scoring members. CMS = 144 GBTC = 74
