Dan in (the) heat

Dan and I headed up to Amesbury last night for the second in the five series "River Rivals" track meets.  It was hot, 90's and windy on the track.  I felt lousy all day and especially lousy when we headed out for our 3 mile warm-up.

After another mile with some strides we hit the start line.  Our plan was to alternate each 800.  I was thinking 82 per 400 would make sense, Dan had other thoughts.  He took it out just under 80 and I was already working way too hard to hang on.  I took over at the half and was able to lead us through the mile in 5:20 but I was toast...burnt toast by that point.  Dan took over for his half and was gone.  I steadily lost ground as he eased away to a win in 10:43 which was four seconds better than last week.  I struggled to a 10:52 which was 12 seconds slower than last week.

I got some water and kept moving on the track getting another mile in before the 800 meters.  I had nothing when we hit the starting line.  Dan got a bad start but went flying by at 100m and kept on speeding up.  He ended up winning in 2:25 and I took second in a very ugly 2:29.

We gathered up our gear and headed out for a 2 mile warm-down for a 10 mile night (and 14 mile day for me).  It wasn't pretty but it was another "fast" effort in the bank.  Only 3 weeks until track nationals!
