GMAA 15k - USATF championship

I've only been running for 4 weeks since missing most of July with a bone bruise.  During that time I worked pretty hard on the ElliptiGo and bike and hoped that I kept some level of fitness.  The first real test was the USATF NE 15km championships this weekend.  I wasn’t really ready to race but it was a team race and as the team goes so do I.  It had been 24 years since USATF NE last held a 15km championship.  There aren’t many 15k’s out there so it usually means a personal best.  In my case everything is pretty much a new PR now that I’m in a new age group.  It also means that everything is also usually my personal worst.
Dan V, Dave La, and I headed out of Haverhill and 3 hours later arrived in Burlington Vermont.  We got our numbers and met up with some of the CMS crew for an easy 2 miles (checking out the last mile of the race).  After a quick change into racing flats we jogged the .7 to the start line.  I was still having issues with the blister from last weekend so the damp conditions were worrying me a bit.  It was in the upper 70s and very humid and there was a pretty stiff breeze blowing.   Having not raced in 8 weeks I really wasn’t sure where my fitness was so I set goals of sub-6:30 (or I’d be disappointed), sub-6:20 (realistic goal), and 6:10 (stretch goal).  I got on the starting line in the 15th row which would be about 200th place.  It seemed like the correct spot.

Off we went with a nice downhill start.  I settled in to a comfortable pace right away and could see some of my fellow 50+ runners nearby.  I hit the mile in a surprisingly easy 6:06.  We turned the corner and now had a 2 mile straight shot right into the wind.  I could see EJ (GLRR) and teammate Martin Tighe a few seconds ahead tucked in with a big group of women.  I picked it up and tucked in as well.  Soon after I moved to the front as the paced slackened.  EJ and I both moved along together hitting a 6:04 and 6:01.  Right at the 5km mark (18:56) we turned and were out of the wind.

That turn also brought us to the toughest mile on the course and Martin surged ahead and I went with him.  We had been rolling by about 5 people per mile before that and now we easily caught a dozen people despite running our slowest mile of the day (6:24).  It was good to have a teammate to work with and neither of us let the pace ease and we kept catching groups in front of us and moving on by.  We reeled off our first sub-6 (5:57) and then a 6:11.  That brought us to 10km in 38:06 (19:10 5km split) and I was looking ahead to see where Dan was.  He had 33 seconds on us at 10k but before 7 miles we caught him as he was standing on the side of the road puking.  Martin and I ran 6:01 and followed that with a 5:59 mile as we caught long-time GMAA runner Norm Larsen.

Martin began to pull away after the 8 mile mark and I just couldn’t match his pace.  I didn’t want to look back as I felt like I was running out of steam.  The 9th mile was my fastest of the day (5:46) and I peeked to see where Norm was and saw Dan in full flight.  His last 2 miles were something like 5:40 and 5:30 after his 7:18 including the stop.  He ended up losing about 1:10 but made up a ton of ground in the last 2 miles.  I had nothing left when he went by and he ended up beating me by 8 seconds.  My last 5k was my fastest of the day (18:51) but not quite fast enough.  I beat my stretch goal of 6:10’s with a 6:06 pace and was happy that the only guys to pass me during the race were Eric Narcisi, Martin, Dan, and Carlos Rivera (who I caught with a mile to go and he re-passed me in the last 200m).

The team did really well with our 50+ squad picking up fourth place in a very competitive senior field.  GMAA did a great job putting this race on with everything I’d want at a championship race (although if it were a bit hotter the 3 water stops might not be enough).  My time was 10 minutes slower than I ran last time I did a 15k championship (1991), a personal worst and a personal best (senior).
