Lone Gull 10k = USATF New England championships

Well, it wasn't pretty but I got it done.  I had high hopes of a "fast" time at Lone Gull which served as the USATF New England 10k championships but it just wasn't my day.

The highlight of this race was the drive to the start.  Dan picked me up and we rode in his Ural motorcycle with me in the sidecar!

We, as did many, arrived late and had to hurry up the warm-up.  Dan and I met up with D-La and we did an easy 2 miles on the course.  It was windy but not terrible and the temperature was just about ideal for racing (although not really ideal for riding in a motorcycle).  With only moments to go, I nearly sprinted the 1/2 mile from parking to the start line.  The race start was then held up about 10 minutes as traffic had been at a stand-still trying to get into the beach parking area.

The start was a bit of a cluster-f as the timing company had a mat that did not go all the way across the road so someone was standing blocking people.  Add to that the lack of announcement or any count-down and people were a bit taken off guard by the start.  I did hear one of the best lines of the day while standing 10 rows back waiting for the start.  Long-time New England runner Craig Fram noted "I remember when I could SEE the starting line".

I got out well, keeping an eye on teammates Martin Tighe and Dan V.  I worked through 3 miles with Martin with Dan anywhere from 10-15 seconds ahead.  Soon after I moved ahead of Martin but had a "twinge" in my calf.  I'd hurt the left calf a couple of times and knew it was a problem immediately.  I eased up just a little and then was passed by Doug Martyn (WRT) which got me racing again.  I felt okay and started to close a bit on Dan after 5 miles, but then the calf locked up on me and I started to hobble.  My last mile and especially the last .2 was just terrible but I finished as best I could trying to kick for every second.  I just missed breaking 36 minutes although my chip time was 35:57.

The 50+ team had our best race this year with a third place finish in a pretty stacked field.

My splits:
5:33
5:48 = 11:21
5:33 = 16:54
5:54 = 22:48
5:47 = 28:35
6:03 = 34:38
1:22 = 36:00
