NHTI 5k

I don't seem to do well at night races.  This (long?) 5k at NHTI has been part of the CARS series for a while and I've never done all that well.  I went into the race with low expectations as I'd done the Boston Marathon on Monday.  It was warm (mid-70s) and windy, and even humid for this double loop race.

I warmed up alone but was happy to see TBA teammates Jim Johnson and Darin Brown out on the course.  I heard that Scott Clark was also on hand which meant I wouldn't be needed for team scoring (top 3 age-graded score).  My goal was to get in a finish in case I missed a race later on in the series, no time goal.  My week thus far had featured VERY slow running.

There was a solid turnout with over 300 runners and another 100 walkers.  I tucked in behind Darin and Scott as we headed into the wind in the first 1/2 mile of the race.  It felt fast but I wanted to stay with the guys for as long as possible.  Scott looked strong as we headed into the mile with the wind at our backs.  With the nearly circular loop there was never too much time either into or against the wind.  I made it through the first loop still with Scott and Darin but heading into the wind toward the 2 mile Scott gapped us and got rolling.  After 2 I got ahead of Darin but Scott continued to pull away.  I was running out of steam.  At the 3 mile mark I turned the corner and could see Darin was close behind, he turned it on and was able to out lean me at the line.

We were given the same time, but Darin was ahead.  I did get him in the age graded scoring.  Definitely a rough night for me, placing 4th in the 50+ and
