30 years ago: June 1989, I had a 402 mile
month with a day off (not sure exactly why). I started the month off with the
Nipmuck half-marathon. Petey and I went to test out what trail running was all
about. We got lost about 200 meters into our warm-up on the trail. Lesson
learned! I ended up winning the half in 1:29:36, a new course record. Six days
later I picked up my second win at the Mt Washington road race with a one
second victory over 7-time winner Bob Hodge. That remains the closest finish in
the history of the race. I ran 62:58 picking up $750 on a day when it was 80
degrees at the bottom while at the top the wind-chill was 27 degrees. I ran
down in a rare sub-60 (59:30). A week later the USATF NE 5k (then called the
NEAC) was held in Greenwich RI. I found myself 10 seconds behind the leaders at
2 miles (9:19) but came up with a 4:35 third mile to move into the lead. Held
it to the finish for a 3 second victory over Hodge 14:23 to 14:26.
