After my hip surgery last October, I spent a lot of time on the indoor bike. I amused myself by reading a lot and watching many movies. I also killed the time thinking about what races I'd like to focus on when I got back to running. I figured I would not really be ready to race until the summer but thought up some other stuff that would be interesting and unusual. A road mile fit both of those categories. I'm no miler by any stretch but kind of enjoy the challenge of doing a distance that isn't really in my wheelhouse (whatever that might be). The USATF Masters Road Mile caught my eye. I made the 500 mile drive out to Rochester NY with teammate Tim Van Orden. We broke up the drive with a couple of interesting runs along the Erie Canal.

We picked up our numbers on the way into the city then tried to find somewhere to eat in downtown Rochester. This city essentially closes up at 5 p.m. and I ended up just stocking up at a convenience store. Our hotel room (Holiday Inn Express) was a let-down as the AC was not turned on for the "Season" and it would get to 75 degrees and humid in the room! I had jokingly told the RD I was visiting all of the sites in town because I'd NEVER be coming back to Rochester, but I probably will hold to that statement. The city actually wasn't that bad but everything seems to be under construction and nothing seemed to be open. Even Dunkin's wasn't open until 8 a.m. (and closed at 2!).
On race day, I got in an easy 6m run in the morning. Then it was a matter of killing 12 hours until the race. I think Tim was impressed with the depth of my Seinfeld knowledge. At 11:30 a.m. we headed out and did three loops of the course to get familiar with it. It definitely wasn't a fast course but it wasn't terrrible either. Many were not happy about 9 turns or the 30' of climb in the last 500 meters. I was more concerned about the heat and humidity. It wouldn't really be a factor in a race that'd take less than 6 minutes but it'd make it a bit more uncomfortable.

Finally at 5 p.m. we could do our warm-up. Teammate Scott Grandfield joined us and we completed our team check in. Then it was a quick change into race flats and accidently leaving Scott behind waiting for us in front of the hotel!
I got in another mile with some strides and felt appropriately lousy. Feeling good before a race is always a bad sign so I took this as being ready to go. The start was going to be a little tricky as 123 lined up and the barricades would narrow to 1/4 of the road width by about 100 meters in. Scott headed to the front of the field and Tim and I chose to get 3 rows from the front which would put about 40 people ahead of us. We also took to the left side as the first turn would be on the right, it seemed like the best option to stay out of trouble. The start was a bit rough with a little pushing and maybe going a bit slower than optimal pace, but it wasn't too bad and by 200 meters (the first turn) I had no trouble. The first 200 was a little uphill then we started the long very gentle downhill. I could see Tim floating away passing many, I was focusing on getting up to the next group and there was always someone to catch up to. I felt that I ran well on the down and into the "turns". I was passing people right up 'til the 500 meters to go sign. Only one guy passed me as we worked up the hill and over the Genessee river toward the finish. I could hear the announcer calling the winner and could also see the 200 to go sign. I kept pushing to the finish and was shocked to see the clock still in the 5-teens. I really expected to run around my indoor track time (5:32) if not slower since the course wasn't FAST. It turned out to be fast to me as I ran 5:19 which is the second fastest time I've run as a 50+ runner (5:16.5 PR).USATF NATIONAL MASTERS MEN'S 50+ TEAM RESULTS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. 15:15 GREATER SPRINGFIELD HARRIERS, INC ( 5:05) ======================================================= 1 4:50 Nat Larson 59 Amherst MA 2 5:10 Alejandro Heuck 57 Amherst MA 3 5:15 Francis Burdett 57 Worcester MA 2. 15:19 GARDEN STATE TRACK CLUB ( 5:07) ======================================================= 1 4:50 Terrance Armstrong 50 Pompton Lakes NJ 2 5:05 Steven Segaloff 51 Tenafly NJ 3 5:24 John Hogan 56 Township Of Washingt NJ 3. 15:38 CENTRAL MASS STRIDERS ( 5:13) ======================================================= 1 5:07 Tim Van Orden 54 Bennington VT 2 5:11 Scott Grandfield 57 Rehoboth RI 3 5:20 Dave Dunham 58 Bradford MA 4. 15:42 ATLANTA TRACK CLUB ( 5:14) ======================================================= 1 5:11 Chip Owens 54 Atlanta GA 2 5:15 Michael Strickland 55 Acworth GA 3 5:16 Chip Hawkins 52 Atlanta GA 4 ( 7:38) Mark Flynn 74 Santa Rosa Beach FL 5. 16:14 GENESEE VALLEY HARRIERS ( 5:25) ======================================================= 1 4:56 Mark Andrews 51 Rochester NY 2 5:38 Mike Nier 57 Rochester NY 3 5:40 Dale Flanders 57 Allegany NY 4 ( 6:04) Venelin Tchamov 55 Rochester NY 5 ( 6:10) Wayne Crandall 59 West Henrietta NY
