I’ve always enjoyed orienteering, I ran my first meet back in 1992, and although I’ve run in over 200 meets I’ve rarely gone out in the last 5 years. It seems I am either racing on the roads, trails, or mountains or I’m injured…both of which keep me out of the woods. Earlier this month I ran in a 24 hour Orienteering meet and it got me thinking about other long-distance O-meets I’ve done. I’ve done 18 long distance races including two local “Billygoats” and one “Blue Hills Traverse”. The Goat and Traverse are a bit unusual in that you are allowed to follow, hence by high finishing places in those! In all I’ve run in two North American championships, two U.S. South Dakota
As if orienteering isn’t “unusual” enough, I included a strange result from 1997. I “ran” an orienteering course at Rafton Reservation on crutches! That was the year I broke my navicular and had surgery to put a screw into my foot. I was itching to get back outdoors and figured it’d be fun to try a course even though I was still hobbling around on crutches. I ended up finishing in second place.
