There was a little chatter after the Horse Hill race this weekend
about it being the “deepest field” for a snowshoe race in NH. The field was definitely deep and there was
an excellent battle up front for the top spot.
I investigated a bit and I think it wasn’t even the deepest field in NH
this YEAR. There are a bunch of ways to
try and figure out depth of field. I
went with both percent back. Based on
that Sidehiller this year would be the deepest field with 31 finishers within
20% of the winner (and 14 within 10% of the winner). At Horse Hill only 14 finished within 20% and
10 within 10% of the winner.
Looking
at all of New England there are three races in Northfield that had very deep
fields and the deepest field in the history of New England snowshoe racing has
to be the National Championships at Bolton Valley in 2006. In a little over 2 weeks we’ll see if the
field at Prospect Mountain can blow that away!

DD, I love that you compile these lists. I'm curious to see the Northfield races.I'm not 100% sure I agree with your logic though. Based on that Woodford one year with deep snow appears like a deep field because the winners couldn't break away. (I didn't race that year but my brother did so I'm unsure of the year)
Keep up the good work. Love your stat keeping and rankings!
Cool stats Dave. To clarify Greg's comment it was Hoot Toot N Whistle 2011 not Woodford. Sorry to hijack your post!
Yeah, very correct. The percent back thing really doesn't capture the full picture. I also made up a list that was based on how many people in the top 10 had also WON a SS race that year. There are a ton of different ways to look at this. I like stirring things up!
