Mill city relay

This weekend I’ll run in my 10th Mill City Relay.  I’ve had the great fortune to have run it with a bunch of different and fun teams.  I’ve raced it as a member of Greater Lowell Road Runners, Winners Circle Running Club, Rogue Runners, Dave’s (an all-star team all named Dave), and Mike Beeman’s Total Sports (under the WCRC banner).

As the field has expanded my pace has slowed.  My best run was probably 1992 with the MBTS team.  I ran as hard as possible and moved us up from 6th place to 3rd place missing out on catching Whirlaway by 9 seconds.  On that day Scott Spence was our first runner cranking out 5:30’s for the 5.7 mile first leg.  Steve Peterson (Petey) took off on leg 2 running 5:15’s for 6.6 miles, followed by Mike Beeman running 5:20 pace for the 1.6 mile leg.  Art Demers picked up the baton for the tough 9.6 mile leg running 5:30 pace and I was the anchor running 4:49’s for 4.6 miles.  GLRR won that day with a time of 2:28:08, WRT was 2nd in 2:29:00 and we came home in 2:29:09.

This weekend I’m hoping to cover the 9.5 mile leg in 6:10-6:20 pace for the GCS 50+ team.  The effort is the same as 27 years ago but the pace per mile is over a minute slower.
