September 1987

30 years ago:  I ran 374 miles in September of 1987 and took one day off, raced twice and did five workouts.  All of the workouts were cross-country, most were at Carlisle although two of them were back at Whortleberry hill working on my climbing skills.   On September 13th I ran my first New England Athletic Congress (NEAC, now USATF NE) grand prix race.  It was a very rainy day in Concord NH or the “Couples 5k”.  Greater Lowell Road Runners teammate Bob Hodge and I broke away in the early going.  I felt like I was just hanging on for all I was worth as we passed the mile in 4:30 and 2 miles in 9:06.  With ½ mile to go I pulled clear of Hodgie and went on to win 14:08.8 to his 14:15.  Despite our 1st and 2nd place finish CMS was able to top GLRR by 3 seconds!

Two weeks later (09/27/87) I got my second win in my second NEAC championship.  The Marshfield 20k hosted the championships on a perfect day (60’s sunny and no wind).  I went out in a small pack and early on Reno Stirrat (CMS) and Larry Olsen (TVFR) and I broke away.  5k splits of 16:00, 15:45, 15:35, and 15:40 brought me home with the win in 1:03:10.
