I’ve got 6 of the top 20 times at Pack
Mondanock. Three of those times were only good enough for 2nd
place and each of those second place finishes was a loss to Eric Morse.
The 1999 race was a great battle. Morse and I were both in very good
shape. I’d run a 2:21 and qualified for the Olympic trials a month before
the race and set a course record at Mt Kearsarge the following week.
Morse finished second at Kearsarge, outkicked me for the win at the USATF NE
12km championships, and set a course record at Wachusett leading up to
Pack. We’d both set personal bests at Mt Washington a few weeks after
pack.
Eric ran the only sub-8:00 mile ever run
in Miller State park to take the win!
From my training log: Warm-up with Rich Bolt, Eric Morse, Mike Casner, Tom Anderson, and Ed Sheldon. With Morse through 9 miles, tried to break away and he flew by me like I was standing still. Warm-down with Eric and Caz, down the mountain. Splits:
