D-la and I carpooled to the race and got there plenty early for (illegal?) parking near the finish. After getting some tax stuff done and my trunk library cleaned out we headed out for a 2 mile warm-up. We stayed on the sidewalk to avoid any grumpy police. After getting into our race gear (I bought new race flats the day before at Whirlaway) we jogged another .7 to get a nice even mileage for the day. I figured we'd be between 100-150th place so we lined up 10 rows back and was a bit surprised that a good number of FAST CMS guys were back there as well. With 600 runners it was a little crowded the first 1/2 mile but nothing terrible. The course rolls pretty much constantly so splits would be all over the place. I was thinking more of the 'feel' than the actual times so I rarely looked at my watch.
Dave and I started rolling through some aggressive starters by 1/2 mile in. It felt fast to me but only just a bit under 6:20 at the mile mark. It was going to be a tough day, no surprise in that. I could see some fellow 50+ runners up ahead and focused on closing the gap.

Dave and I stayed pretty much side-by-side through 4. Dave made a move on a big downhill and my quad was a bit sore and it seemed too early to push. I lost about 5 seconds on Dave but then started gaining ground on the tough hill before 5m. We got Chris Smith (SRR) and Terry McNatt (CSU) on that hill and closed on Wayne Levy (BAA). I latched onto Wayne as we went through 5m. A quick mile had us pull ahead of Dave but then Wayne gapped me and I couldn't go with him. I caught a couple of the LOUDEST chatting women in the race. On and on they yammered. Nothing more annoying in a race. I get it, you aren't running all-out, but really? I was glad when I could hear their voices fade behind me. I wasn't able to gain back to Wayne and was worried that Dave might be gaining on me.
By 8 miles I was feeling pretty tired, maybe my lack of long runs (I rarely go over 6 miles in a single run) was catching up with me? I took a peek on the turn at 8.5 and Dave was close. I was running out of gas but managed to hang on taking 3rd in the 55-59 with Dave just 6 seconds back.
Our team had a great day, taking 1st in the 50+ (and the 40+ as well). Now we have a bit of a break until the 5k championships in May. Maybe I'll even get in some speedwork by then, but I'll settle for not being any more injured than I am now.
