Looking back - 25 years ago (June 1995)

25 Years ago (June 1995): I had a decent month, getting in 380 miles and racing three times. On 06-11-1995 I ran for my third and final time at the Dipsea trail race in Mill Valley, CA. This is one of the oldest continuously held races in the country and also one of the most unique. The runners are handicapped based on age and gender with the “scratch” runners last to depart Mill Valley on a 7.1 mile trek to Stinson Beach. The race features 2,000’ of climb and descent on narrow single-track trail and the famous “Dipsea steps”. During my previous two attempts I’d won the fastest time award but did not take the overall victory. This time I passed almost all of the 1,400 racers. I again ran the fastest time of the day (47:36) but took 2nd place overall. Petey ran the 9th fastest time of the day and got a numbered black shirt (highly prized) by finishing in the top 35.

A week later I did a rare back to back race weekend. I’ve done doubles before but rarely the day after racing up Mt Washington. On 06-17-95 I took on Mt Washington as did 900 others. My then teammate Craig Fram and I worked together and at 7 miles decided to tie as neither of us had a shot at the win and no one was going to catch us. We crossed the line in step (not holding hands!) in 1:03:20 in a tie for 2nd place (each picking up $600 in the process).

1 Gideon Mutisya           28 M AMSTERDAM         NY 1:01:42        8:07

5 Eddy Hellebuyck         34 M ALBUQUERQUE     NM 1:04:49       8:32 (admitted drug cheat)

The next day I headed to Cappy’s Kopper Kettle in Lowell MA. I’d done this race before and they always had good prize money (500/200/100) so why not? It was a brutal day topping out at 95 degrees. Jesse Cody took the win as he went at 4 miles and I just couldn’t go. I took home $200 for second place in 25:18 and made the front page of the Lowell Sun the next day.

1 25:16 Scott Cody
2 25:18 Dave Dunham
3 25:42 Chris McDermott
4 26:13 Eric Beauchesne

7 27:34 Jose Urita
8 27:56 Tom Doody

I got a slow start, I'm in 8th place (#304)
