Looking back - 30 years ago (June 1990)

30 Years ago (June 1990): Not much going on, I had a low mileage month (296) but I’m not sure why. No injuries of note. I started the month with the USATF (then NEAC) 10k championships in Plainville, MA. It was a windy and warm day on this point to point course with just under 1,000 finishers. The lead pack broke away at 2 mile and I couldn’t go, I hung in the chase pack until 3.5 but then drifted off the back and ended up alone. I took home $300 for my 8th place finish (pretty decent money, total of $20,000!) in 30:38.

1 29:50 Michael Platt                 11 31:05 Antonio Zeferino          Women

2 29:53 Ken Moloney                 12 31:09 Tom Anderson             1 32:15 Uta Pippig

3 29:55 Jose Rocha                    13 31:10 Scott Clark                  2 32:27 Aurora Cunha

4 29:57 Geoffrey Smith              14 31:26 Earl owens                  3 34:36 Peg Donovan

5 29:59 John Campbell               15 31:30 Rick Doiron

6 30:18 Richard O’Flynn             16 31:30 Lou Ristaino

7 30:30 Andy Ronan                  17 31:37 Tony Darocha

8 30:38 Dave Dunham           18 31:37 Frank Ritchie

9 30:48 Jimmy Fallon                 19 31:41 Larry Sayers

10 30:51 Fernando Braz             20 31:43 Tony Bates

Two weeks later it was up the Mt Washington Auto road where I had a disappointing run (1:01:37 for 2nd place). I ran with Derek Froude for the first 2.5 then he buried me. He went on to win breaking my course record and becoming the first to run under 1 hour.
