I’ve been excited about the Luti race since the CARS first announced the schedule earlier this year. Although the course isn’t super-fast (two tough hills) it is pretty decent and always has good competition to drag you along. I was a little nervous about pushing it a bit much during the week as I was on vacation and up in Vermont bagging a bunch of towns. I did a little track workout on Wednesday (with Eric Morse) and ran my fastest non-downhill mile of the year (5:37.4). We did a 5:59 mile before that and I noted that it was my goal-pace for the 5 mile. It did not feel easy!
I met up with Jim A and Christin D for a warm-up. We did the last 1.5 miles of the race out & back. Always a good reminder to see the finish of the course. I put on my racing flats and did another mile over to the start line. It was great to see nearly 400 turn out for the race including a lot of good competition in the CARS team category and a lot of fast 50+ runners.
I got in the second row and took a quick look around. Joe Shairs was going to be the winner in the 50+, but I wasn’t sure who else was around for the 55-59. Doug D had just turned 55 and I’d seen a few other faster old men around. It really didn’t matter so much as I was more interested in getting myself a sub-30 and hoping that’d be enough to stay ahead of Ernie B and Jim A in the CARS age graded masters. I got out well and Joe shot off into the distance as things settled in. I ended up behind the lead pack of women and hit the first ½ mile in 2:55 which was right where I wanted to be. Things thinned out over the next flat half-mile (3:00) as people found their pace. I kind of latched on to Jaclyn S who I’d battled back and forth with a few years back at Luti. We worked up the big hill (1/2 mile that gained 120’) and I was pleased to only slow to 3:21. Now we’d have very fast running for 2 more miles. Jen M went by and I stayed with her and Jaclyn as they worked on tracking down the lead woman. I hadn’t seen any 50+ guys ahead of me except for Joe (5:25 at the mile!) so I was pleased with how things were going. A 2:48, followed by a 2:55 and a 2:47 got me to 3 miles in pretty good shape. A sub-30 was still possible. I lost some ground on the climb (3:07) but still got too four miles only a couple of seconds over 24 minutes. The ladies had all pulled away by then and would put 20 seconds on me in the last mile. I tried to find another gear but had nothing. With ½ mile to go my left calf muscle went into spasm but didn’t really hobble me, it was worrisome but I don’t think it slowed me down any. I kept after it although I lost a bit of my forward motion on the grass/mud/puddles as we went around the outside of the track. I could see the finish clock with lest than 200 meters to go and gave all I had but came up just short with a 30:01. I did take solace in winning the 55-59 age group and taking the Age Graded masters title just barely edging Ernie B again. This series is going to go right to the end!
