My motivation this year has been the CARS, but my focus was definitely off this week as my hip did not seem to respond to the cortisone shot. I could go on about how I don’t like racing at night (very hard to properly fuel and I’m usually ready to call it a day by 6pm) but I was still hopeful of a decent effort since the NHTI Delta Dental races is typically one of the fastest in the series. The dead-flat double loop course is certified, but always seems to run long (maybe because we can’t always run the tangents?). I headed north right after work as I was uncertain of how bad traffic was going to be. Normally the NHTI race is in April, not during the height of summer with everyone heading out for the weekend. Traffic wasn’t terrible and I had a little time to take a few pictures around Campus and met up with teammate Jim Pawlicki who had also left very early.
I gave Perry some grief at packet pick-up as he had guaranteed that it would be “in the 70’s with zero humidity”. It was 85 degrees and a sticky dew-point even when the race kicked off at 6pm. Jim P and I met up with Darin Brown (also our Duct Tape & Spit teammate) and hit the course for a warm-up. It was downright hot and one of those “dry mouth” kind of evenings. Seemed like no matter how much you drank, right away you needed more. I switched into racing flats and went out for another mile. I wasn’t sure if I was more worried about my hip, my strained hamstring, or just my general lack of energy. It was going to be a long 5k.
I lined up with Darin and Doug Deangelis and told Doug I was hoping to run around 6’s and see how it went. Originally I’d hoped to run a LOT faster but all things considered I felt 6’s was more realistic. Yikes! It seemed like an all-out sprint the first ½ mile. I wasn’t in the top 20 in the early going and Doug and Jim Angel (Kezar Lake) were already pulling away. I made my way around a few of the NHTI XC kids and passed the top lady right around the ½ mile (2:56). I slowly closed on Doug and Jim but it seemed like every time I’d just about latch onto them they’d pull away again. I never looked at my watch again as my only goal was to get up to Doug & Jim and try to be competitive. By the end of the first loop I’d gotten back with them again.
I got around Doug as we started back down Fan Road and was a step or two behind Jim. I was not feeling good but kept telling myself “get to the 2m”, after that I kept thinking “go with him until 2.5”. I did manage to stay within 2-3 seconds of Jim as late as 2.5 but then he slowly pulled away and I just had nothing to give. I ended up staggering into the finish 5-6 seconds behind Jim and very nearly caught by the Kezar Lake second guy (also in the 50+ age group!). I very nearly hit 6’s with a chip time of 18:40 and change so no complaints. Doug, Jim A, and Darin joined me for a nice loop of the NHTI XC course for a warm-down.
I decided that since it was such a nice night and I’m rarely out for sunset I’d boogie on over to Oak Hill and visit the fire tower for sunset. I actually felt a bit better on the 1.25 mile (400’ of climb) up to the tower and got there just as the sun was sinking behind Mt Kearsarge. I took a few pics then headed off to the highest point in Concord (a little below the summit) before heading back down just as it was getting fully dark.
