30
Years ago – June 1992:
I raced four times this month including two New England road running
championships (10k & 5k). I started the month running a 30:12 at the New
England 10km championships in Winthrop. I was in the lead pack of a dozen
guys through 5m when the leaders threw down a 4:30 mile and I could not go. I
ended up finishing in 5th place. The following weekend I headed down to
Litchfield CT for the Litchfield Hills 7.05 mile race. This was (and may
still be) a very popular race that had a lot of cash and invited elite runners.
It was hot and humid (over 90 degrees) but I had a good run, finishing in 5th
place in a field of 1,000 runners, 34 seconds behind Derek Froude who won in
34:25. Teammates Larry Sayers (35:30 7th place) and Eric Morse (36:28 10th
place) were also in the top ten. The next week I was off to Mt Washington
and hit with another humid and warm day. Visibility was only 10 feet on the
upper slopes as Matt Carpenter ran away with the win in 1:00:43. I ran quite a
bit of the race with Derek Froude who pulled away in the later stages. I took
third place in a disappointing 1:03:18. A week later it was back to the
flat-land and another New England road running championship (5k). I had
a lousy summer cold and felt terrible warming up for the race, the 80 degree
temperatures and high humidity didn’t help. I hung with college teammate Dennis
Simoniatis and was able to outkick him over the last ½ mile for a win in 14:36.
