Looking back - June 2002

20 Years ago – June 2002: This month was a turning point for me, unfortunately it was a turn in the wrong direction (down). I started the month with a 5th place finish at the Pack Monadnock 10 mile. A week later I was in Anchorage Alaska for the Wolverine Peak mountain race which was a qualifier for the US mountain team. Teammate Eric Morse took the win in 47+ minutes and I was second in 48:43 and we both qualified for the squad. Six days later I ran the Mt Washington road race which was shortened to half-way due to bad weather above treeline. I just couldn’t get going fast enough and finished a disappointing 5th place in 28:27. Six days later I raced in Torhout Belgium in the World 100km challenge. The race was about 33 kilometers too far for me and I was out of action at 67km and in the hospital for a good part of the day. It took me a very long time to get over that race which really set me back. I’ll never attempt 100km again, unless it is over the span of a few days
