Looking back - June 2007

15 Years ago – June 2007: I raced four times during this month all of them mountain races.  Started the month with the Pack Monadnock 10 mile. I ran the first 3in a big group then with 6 guys through the 5 mile mark.  Pulled away from the group after that as the big climbing started but couldn’t reel in teammate Jim Pawlicki.

2 Jim Pawlicki 66:25
3 Dave Dunham 67:13
4 Richard Bolt 67:50

The following weekend I directed and raced at the Northfield Mountain race.  I messed up my wonky hamstring the day before when setting up the course and wasn’t sure if I’d even attempt the race. The 70s and high humidity on race morning didn’t improve how I felt.  We had over 200 finishers and I just missed a top 10 (and Verrington kept me from winning the 40+).

Next up was the Mt Washington road race (06/16/07).  I recovered pretty well during the week but was not looking forward to the race as it was sunny and quite warm.  I was about 25th at the start of the climb and managed to move up throughout finishing in 12th place (70:40)

My final race of the month was the USA Mountain running championships at Cranmore mountain.  This was probably the most insane course I’d ever done.  A three loop course (4.6km per loop) that tarted at the TOP of the mountain.  This made for a lot of folks going out WAY too hard on the first downhill.  My goal was to not get too wrecked on the first loop and try to make up ground on each loop.  I had reasonably even loops (23:19, 25:24, and 26:12) to take 12th place overall and 3rd in the 40+
